Rubbernecking is infuriating! It snarls traffic, wastes time, gas, causes accidents, and interferes with emergency workers. People slow down to watch someone change a flat tire for craps sake!

Couldn't we deploy some sort of lightweight portable screens in front of accidents to prevent all the gawking from motorists. Cops could still stand in front and direct traffic, and honestly say, "nothing to see here."

It's not like you ever really *see* anything anyway... just mangled vehicles and maybe a glimpse of a stretcher. I understand people have morbid curiosity, but really, what's the point? Just so you can have something interesting to talk about at work? I'll bet nobody can even remember the last accident they saw, but I guarantee you had to slow down to a crawl so everyone could stop and go "oooooh!"

Maybe if we got used to seeing large white screens at every accident, we'd stop all the rubber-necking? What would be the point in slowing to look at another "blank white screen?

Still would not stop the problem..
1-people will and need to slow down when emergency vehicles are on the scene.
2-people will become that more intrigue and try even harder to find out what happened.

I've been a Fire Fighter for over 20 years and have tried many ways to help in this area also. I have even used 2 fire engines to block the view but, apparently the people were intrigue by the fire trucks as well. But, when I have my Fire Fighters on a scene their safety is my priority so slowing traffic done is a must.

In most states it is the law that you have to slowdown or change lanes when approaching emergency vehicles at the scene of an accident or police cars performing a traffic stop on the side of the road for safety reasons. Fines can get really pricey if a cop decides to pull you over for not slowing down.

I agree about the infuriating aspect of rubbernecking. I don't think a temporary screen would help. People would still look to try to "see" what's happening.

Nice try. Believe it or not, people will still slow down to see the white screen.

Humans are just curious creatures.

Sure , it is infuriating, but it may cause more problems in getting a safety fence up than to get the traffic moving

No. People will still slow down to see if they can get a glimps of what is going on. They may even slow even more to see what is going on if it is hidden.

No, because then people will just look at the temp screens.
