I've never forgotten what it's like to be a kid. This is why when I was in my early forties, my youngest daughter (about seven at the time) approached me and handed me two pieces of paper on which she'd been drawing:
"Dad, you are officially a Kid. So here's a kid license for you -- grade 'Best.' And here's a map to Kid Land... here's the petting zoo, and here's the water slide, and here's a sno-cone stand..."
"And what's that over there?" I asked, pointing to a straight line that led off the map.
"Oh, that's the road to Grown-up Land," she said, adding with a sneer, "All you ever do THERE is work."
Most important -- I take kids seriously. I look them in the eyes when they talk to me, and I listen to them. And they seem to sense this -- kids at my own children's school come up to me and show me things, talk to me, as if they know I'm going to treat them -- astonishing as this may seem -- as though they were human beings too.
So if I could tell adults one thing THEY'VE forgotten about being a kid, it would be that kids are at least as important as the end-of-quarter budget report or the new end-user license agreement or, heaven help us, which of the Desperate Housewives is the most desperate this week. And they deserve grown-ups' undivided attention at LEAST as much as the third at-bat in the bottom of the ninth or fourth-and-three with fifteen seconds on the clock.
So gr'ups -- look your kids in the eyes when they talk to you, listen to them when they speak, and respect them. If you demonstrate compassion, attention and respect, maybe your kids will too. Mine certainly do. But then their dad's an official Kid.

The novelty of everything being new. The FIRST time you went on a roller coaster. The FIRST time you ate ice cream. The FIRST time you saw that movie. Adults take everything for granted, but a newborn baby? Even a blade of grass is new to them. Wouldn't it be nice to have literally every single thing in the world be new and exciting to you??

Responsibilities. Parents have thousands of them. Kids, work, bills, everything. Kids dont have too much to worry about.

Kids are a lot smarter than adults give them credit for. I remember that from my own youth. :)
