a lot of good suggestions so far, but some will get you bitten if you move too fast. First off, when you let a dog sniff you, you don't do it with an open hand, you do it with a closed fist and you let them smell the back of your fist. If his reaction is okay, you can slowly move to his back and ribs. Stay away from his mouth for a while. Rub his back and ribs. If he turns over, you can scratch his belly or paws. If not, continue rubbing for a few minutes. The food in the pocket or in your hand thing, will get you bitten if it is a new dog that does not have trust in you. They can see it as a way of teasing him and could take it personal and could react in a way you don't like. From and in a controled area, perferably a kennel or a tied up line, grab a bowl and put dog food in it. When you take it to him, place it on the floor and back away. IF THIS IS AN AGGRESSIVE DOG he may growl at you while you are too close. Let him eat. Dont look at him while he eats. When he/she is done, let him go out fo the kennel or off the chain/leash and then pick up the bowl. IF the dog is welcoming, place the bowl on teh floor and let him eat. When he is done, just walk up and take the bowl then let the dog go. Best to wait a few minutes to an hour for safety (10-60 min.) From here, go for a walk with him/her. USE A LEASH or a LEAD. Take him for a good walk and let him/her sniff around as much as they want. When you get back, let him/her relax while you sit somewhere near her/him. Not too close but close enough. If they like you at this point, they will come to you on their own and sniff you and let you pet them. HERE you can pet their heads and bellies and backs, etc. If they don't come to you, it will take some more time with them. Playing is a step you do when you feel confident that the dog has accepted you as a presence. All these steps are for a dog that you bring home or you find in one day. If you feel confident that the dog likes you, move on to playing (at least and hour to two hours after he/she ate). From here, it all comes down to time spent with them as well as consistancy and a basic routine. It will take time to fully earn their friendship, just like humans, but they can let you close in a short time.

I had this problem once. It was a year or two ago and I used to go over to this dog pound, they had a middle-aged german shepherd named Buddy. He'd been abused as a puppy and didn't like anybody, didn't even like the people that worked there that well. I used to go over to see him every single day, I'd bring him treats and gifts and toys all the time. When he learned to trust me I'd bring him for walks and we slowly grew a very close friendship and he used to protect me from other people.

It takes time, patience, and you showing him that you honestly care and would never hit him no matter what.

That is a good question, i think it really depends on who you ask. Some might see it one way while some might view it completely the opposite way. Me personally, I would take the dog for walks dailiy, and try to stick with cosntand times

feed the dog a variety of food

constantly pet the talk, play with it as much as possible

and only be as firm as you need to be when giving the dog discipline

good luck with your dog

Put your hand out palm down for it to sniff. If it reacts well, pet it gently. Then, work with treats and show the dog lots of love. It is actually really simple and such a worth while thing!

Be calm at first and let him sniff you, then hold out your hand slowly and let him sniff it.

If he appears to like you, pet him and speak kindly to him, that should break the ice for a nice long friendship.
