Amongst the benefits...
It gives your body a break. Disrupts your normal daily routine for a little while.
I've been fasting every Ramadan for a long time now. I've always noticed that I become more focused and very creative during this particular month.
Also, aside from losing weight, fasting remembers us how important simple things we take for granted - like food and water, are to us.

As far as religion goes...there are a couple spiritual rewards to fasting. Giving up something for Christ, for example. As a type of "penance". To become more like Christ and the saints who fasted, too.

Spiritually it will let you(a Spirit) Ascend over your Fleshly Body to where you have more controll in your life.
Always drink Plenty of Water all the time (to flush out toxins) and it is good to check with your Doc to make sure you can handle fasting at that time.

I'd say that it builds dicipline, and helps you understand the way others in the world live. It makes you respect food and water more, and enjoy it more.

You are giving up something to draw nearer to God in prayer and meditation. In return, you have a closer relationship and blessings from God for such intence concentration, worship, and prayertime with God.
1 Corinthians 7:5 Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency
Matthew 6:16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Matthew 6:18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
Fasting is between you and God alone. It is to be done in secret and not to be announced to the world with a saddened face or to show you are suffering and hungry. This is considered to be a hypocrite in the eyes of God.
If and when you choose to fast, may the Lord shower you with His favor and cleans you from beginning to the end of your fast. Fasting is the most powerful spiritual discipline of all the Christian disciplines. Through fasting and prayer, the Holy Spirit can transform your life.

what CHANGE it brought among Muslims?.
u dont have to prepare urself for a fast. u have to prepare urself to persevere and to control ur entire system -- body, mind and soul. Ramadhan is not just about fasting, its time for us to learn to keep ourselves in control. it is a time where one can learn to deal with the evil things and intentions and looking forward to being a better human being. it is a time to learn to forgive and ask for forgiveness. Ramadhan is the time for people to better themselves in virtues of endurance, patience and forgiveness. thats what its all about. it is the time to learn to give.
may the peace and blessings of Allah(God) be with us and may He guide us in the right path. may He shower His mercy on us and protect us.

From what I understand it supposedly "cleans out the toxins" in your body, but your liver does the same thing. I remember anal flushing was supposed to clean out your toxins too...turned out to be a load of crap...no pun intended.
