My dentist gave me an antibiotic to get rid of tooth pain after fixing the offending tooth. He said the bacteria was causing the pain. Try to kill the germs. Use mouthwash. Use something to numb the tooth if you can't stand it (like ambesol). Then SEE THE DENTIST.

Some OTC items are Anbesol or Orajel (both of these are Brand names for the generic term, benzocaine). Both Anbesol and Orajel come in either a liquid form or a gel form. Follow directions on the container. (I used Anbesol for my toothache.) They are oral local anesthetics that deaden the pain.
Also, you can place an aspirin on the infected tooth and let it dissolve, which acts like the anesthetics above, to deaden the area.
NOTE: These are all temporary measures. You will still need to see a dentist to alleviate the cause of the pain.

Please do not put an aspirin or any other tablet analgesic on the tooth or tissue. It may deaden the pain for awhile, but you will end up with a chemical burn as well as a toothache later. Rinse with warm salt water every hour for five minutes. The infection is trying to burrow through the bone, you want it to drain toward the mouth and not out the face. Do not put any heat or cold on your face. Call your dentist as soon as possible. Take OTC analgesics as recommended and as directed.

The truth is you should put some fresh sage in your mouth. (NOT DRIED). It is a natural desensitizer as is fresh mint though not as potent. The best thing is put a wet mint tea bag on your tooth and let it set there for 15 minutes. For an abcessed tooth, rub the area with a fresh garlic clove cut in half, and eat 1 or 2 fresh cloves of garlic daily. For the future to avoid tooth decay use alfalfa, burdock, dandelion, and violet in your diet to have a free and easy smile.
