you just need to try both ways before you actually make up your mind. everybody is different so you might want to experiement with that.
but the real saying is "BEER BEFORE LIQUOR, NEVER BEEN SICKER, LIQUOR BEFORE BEER, AND YOU'RE IN THE CLEAR."
BUT really its a case by case decision, i've done both and never gotten sick but im a trained professional, the lighter weights might want to ease up on the liquor on top of beer theory

its beer before liquor that makes you sick and its only kind of true. it takes twelve ounces of beer to equal a shot of alcohol. So if you drink beer it slowly goes into your system so you get more drunk over time. Wtih a shot it goes right into your system so you know how drunk you are going to be. So if you have a few shots you feel it and can then drink beer because your less likely to over do it. If you drink beer first you dont feel it right away so the shots after make you more likely to over drink. But it doesnt matter what you have if you drink too much your going to get sick
