I would! I would get speech therapy, oral surgery, whatever.... there's this guy at my work who's at least 40 something or whatever and has a lisp - I can hardly concentrate on what he's saying! I just sit there and think: "can't you hear yourself? didn't your parents care enough to either teach you how not to talk like that or find someone who could...?" I also think that about people with f'd up teeth by the way. I just wonder "didn't this person have parents?!" Yeah, I know I'm mean to think this -- but, since I know that I am that way, I wouldn't want to set my kids up for that from others....

I also know several others who are grown and "educated" and talk this way. It is ridiculous!

at age 40 he may have had bells palsy that is a small stroke that left him with a lisp, I am 36 years old just had double jaw joint surgery that left me with nerve damage and YES I when i am tired have a lisp. so I guess you wouldn't want to talk to me.........
sometimes a person that had cleft palate when the hard plate is put in can leave you with a lisp. there are multiple reasons an adult may have a lisp. including thing like multiple sclerosis and things like that. I am certain he is aware of it and even is embarrassed by it. He may also have cerebral palsy or another neuromuscular disease. ALS can cause this too.

Sorry but most adults with a lisp have a good reason and it isn't from lack of speech therapy.
(source sped training, andi myself have a lisp due to nerve damage)

After a certain age, like 5 yes! As for the bad teeth, some people can't afford good dental care. My parents and apparently your's had insurance and could afford good preventative dental care. Some people are just not as lucky as we were. I naturaly have almost no enamal on my teeth. If my parents hadn't had the money to put veneers on my teeth every couple of years, my teeth would have rotted out of my head by now. I'm only 23! I still have to pay for this as an adult or let them rot and get dentures by 30. Some people can only afford a toothbrush and plain old flouride toothpaste. You can't blame them for that.

You could say that about anything-you might have a big honking nose (God forbid!), and others might think why didn't her parents get her a nose job or a flat A cup boobies (God forbid!) and think why doesn't she get breast implants, or maybe your going gray or have a bald spot (God forbid!), again, why not hair dye or rogaine? Or a really annoying Rosie Perez voice (God forbid!). To answer your question, I would tell them to see the speech pathologist at their school, but sometimes certain speech impediments stay a life time.

Well, let's all just pray your kids one day don't develop complexes because mom expects them to be something they are not. Try not to judge without living in their shoes. When you have children you will find out to your dismay that you will not be the perfect mom you expect to be.

Sometimes you just do your best, and hope it is enough. Remember being overbearing and expecting too much can create as many problems and not doing anything at all. I am sure your parents don't ride you about every flaw you have... if they did you wouldn't be as egocentric as you are coming across in this question.

No offense intended- just reality

as someone w/bad teeth, and a stuttering problem, i must say you're being extremely self centered. i grew up with a learning disability in math, and i can assure you, we know we're different. Not all of us can run to daddy or mommy to fix everything, either because they're not there, or they don't have the money. if you're that worried about this person's 'problem', first of all, look in the mirror and see your own faults. second, when you're done doing that, if it bothers you so much that this person isn't perfect, stop whining on here, grow some huevos, and pay for the treatment yourself. otherwise, shut up!!

My jaw and mouth are too expensive for anyone to correct. It's a birth defect. There are other things that happened with it though. I get by with lots of enunciation or quiet speech or saying nothing at all.

I used to think the way you did about it though. My kids are more fortunate and not born with it.

you would definately want to get your child all the help possible. my daughter had it she first had speech therapy then she had surgery to correct it. along with speech therapy again. but it all worth it. your her only guidence in life his only parent. there should be a "First Steps" program in the town you live in just try to find out everything before you rush into anything. good luck!

today, a child would get speech therapy, i don't know about years ago. i don't believe you ever get "rid" of a lisp, but with speech therapy it would maybe just end up being a "slight lisp".

There is nothing wrong with people who have a lisp...they can't help it...but I used to have one when I was younger...I took speech classes and was trained out of it....most times, you have to wait unti lthe child's adult teeth grow in to train them out of it....
