For those of you who are curious, my daughter was stillborn 26 years ago. That's a long time, and the pain is pretty much gone. But the understanding I have for another person's experience remains.

Oh, wow, this is going to sound so shallow of me, but this gift totally rocked!

My ex-mother-in-law came to visit her grandchildren, while I was a full time student and also working full time. Naturally, some household tasks had fallen to the bottom of the to-do list. It isn't so easy being a single mom of two toddlers, one of whom is disabled, going to school full time, and working 40+ hours per week.

She was very polite, and didn't comment, but before she left she remarked that she knew my birthday was coming soon, and asked if I minded if she hired a maid service to clean my house for me for my birthday.

While the hired maids cleaned my house on a Saturday, I got to take my little boys out to lunch and the playground, and came home to a neat, orderly, clean house. :) The gift was more than the cleaning, it also was the free hours with my sons and the relief of the burden that had been hanging on me, to complete the work that needed to be done. I've never appreciated a gift more than that one.

I was given(by who or what means I don't know) an inherent love of the earth and all its creatures... I am completely and utterly entranced by all the beautiful life on this glorious planet, and by some means I was given the ability to love all of it with equal passion and fervor, and equipped with insatiable curiosity for learning about and understanding it all. This inherent love of animals and nature brought to me the greatest gifts I have ever received... cats, dogs, beavers, birds, rabbits and many other animals as friends, companions and family members. It never ceases to amaze me that 2 completely different species of animals can live together, learn to communicate, form strong emotional bonds and everlasting friendships... My 2 dogs and 4 cats (and all who came before RIP) are more than just animals to me, they are honest, loyal and loving family members and they are the greatest gifts I have ever been privileged enough to have bestowed upon me... my only grief is that most came to me through the hands of cruel abusers who abandoned and broke the hearts of thier innocent victims, who all the while unconditionally loved thier uncaring owners.

When we lost our first baby (miscarriage) my husband came home from work to be with me. But of course, he couldn't fix me or make it better, which made him very nervous and upset.

I didn't understand that at the time. I felt like the greatest failure in the world, and I was so afraid that he resented me for losing our child. He just didn't know how to comfort me.

He ended up out in his workshop and he made me a wooden heart out of old pine and he sanded it down and finished it for me. I'm a talk about our feelings kind of girl, but he expressed his in a way that was comfortable and meaningful to him. I love him for that.

I still have it in my office.

As corny as this sounds, "love." And if you knew my background, you would understand why this gift, in my case, is the greatest gift of all. Long story short, I learned at an organic level that I am worthy of love.

1. salvation through Christ (Sunday school answer 101) :)
2. my little girl -she is adopted. The Chinese government "assigned" her to us, but there is no way I can look at her and how she fits into this family and not believe that it wasn't divine providence that put her there. What a gift.

That would be my daughter. I believe she's a gift from God, but either way I've never received anything better.

The freedom to not have to worship a god that believes that it's okay to allow so much pain and misery in the world, and thinks it's okay to twist people, not give them a second chane, and then burn them for all eternity.
