Its too late to book an Alaskan cruise for this year. The Alaska cruise season is about over. BUT, now is the perfect time to book early for next season, starting in May, and get a good discount on the price. You are more likely to find a fare at about your $2K that you have saved if you wait until next year. Unless you plan to add a few more dollars to that you are probably looking at getting an inside cabin.
Mexico is possible if you want to go in the next 90 days. But it may be more expensive. One major rule in cruising is book early to get the best rates and cabins.
I suggest that you go to a few cruise line web sites and just see what they may have that interests you. All of the cruise lines have all of the information about their ships, their port stops, and the various prices right on their web sites.
I have been on an Alaska cruie on Princcess and recommend them and Royal Caribbean

An Alaska cruise is the most popular but they end in September as the weather can get cold. Lived there for awhile during summertimes, but when it would snow on Labor Day in Anchorage....it was time to head south.
If you can't wait until next year, go on a Mexico cruise; a Hawaii one is much better but a little more expensive. Dec./Jan. is a good time to book next year cruise to Alaska to get the best rate.
Two grand can be enough, but it will depend on where you are flying from and what type of a cabin you want on the ship and how many are going. Check with a travel agent to get the info; online websites only give you prices and not the general info you apparently need.

If you really want to go Alaskan, by all means wait for next summer. And while you are waiting, keep saving money so you can extend your time in Alaska and see more of the gorgeous scenery.
If you absolutely can't wait to go on a cruise, I would suggest a Carribean cruise over Mexico. The prices are going to be about the same and the Caribbean is so much more amazing.
Happy Sails!

Ancorage is nice in the winter, Keep in mind the days are short and the nights are cold. If you love winter, go for it. I didn't think any cruises were available. Really Really ccccccooooolllllddd.
Wait until late spring. The glaicier cruise is super. If you want sun and fun Mexico, and you could still get to Alaska with the grand you have left.

Most Alaska cruises are offered May thru September so I don't think it will be easy to find a winter cruise to Alaska. If you are thinking of going alone you may find costs a bit higher since rates are based on double occupancy usually.
You can find some good deals on last minute Mexico cruises if you are flexible on time.

Several of the above answers are correct - the last cruise ship to head to Alaska is in late Sept. They do not cruise in the winter. So it looks like Mexico is your best bet - although you can go to Alaska but not by cruise ship. Plus you will be much warmer in Mexico! :)

Little late interior the 12 months for an Alaska cruise, till they are going by ability of the Alaska Marine street ferry equipment (better than a cruise), so i assume they are going interior the spring. in the event that they are going to the Southeast (Ketchican, Juneau) supply them a stylish raincoats and hats, or for previous fogies, an umbrella. in the event that they finally end up interior the interior, supply them a gold pan, and a sturdy pair of water-resistant trekking boots. and don't overlook the mosquito repellent.

No cruise line travels to AK in the winter. If they do there will be nothing to do. Denali and most other places close down. Go to Mexico.
