A cutter usually has deep self esteem issues and/or a feeling that they're not good enough. You really need to convince her to get counseling. She may some day go too far. Though, this is what turns cutters on; it is the risk of going too far and being on the edge of ending their life. Definitely you need to let someone know that can get her help.

If she's wearing shirts that show off her cuts, she's not a real cutter. She's doing it to get your attention or make you feel bad. A real cutter hides their secret and won't wear clothes that show cuts no matter how hot it is.

This is my opion, I am not a shrink or even have more then the college required course of psychology behind me, but sadly to say in my younger years, I did something similar and I can tell you what I felt and why I did such a thing. When a person hurts emotionally, wheter it is from childhood trauma or more recent emotional abuse, causing physical harm to yourself, is a way of calling for help and allowing your emotional pain to be seen, I remember thinking or feeling that after I burned myself with a cigarette the outside of my body matched the inside. The only way I see to help her without telling anyone is to convince her to get professional help. If you truly care about her, and I think you do because you took the time to ask how to help, then offer to take her to a council er. For her to do this to herself she really has to feel horrible inside, I remember hating myself so bad, think of it as the aftershocks of a serious car accident and having to have physical therapy, one visit to a professional isn't going to do the trick. It makes me sick to think that one point in my life I was so desperate for help and I am glad that I found it. IF you can find it for her, take her and be the one person who turns her life from a living hell to one she can actually live.

You need to get her to someone that can help her! Right away! You are risking her life by not saying anything and I think that you know that. I bet there is a hot line or something in your area for people that are depressed! Call information or look in the local yellow pages, under crisis hot lines or something like that! Good Luck!!!!

ok. cutting is stupid. tell her to break a finger or something if she wants pain, it leaves alot less scars. i never got into crap like that when stressed. i just recently got over a big anger management problem. when i got angry for any reason i would hit something very hard. usually brick walls, car doors concreete and so on. but i never really solves anything. seriously though urge her to snap a finger, it wont last long she's only got 10 of them

she's like my brother. and we make sure all knives, cutters and anything sharp are locked and kept away from him.
and when we see signs of depression, we are there to PATIENTLY listen (for all the mumblings and cryings and blah blah blah), even if we do not understand or agree with anything he says. we just make sure that he feels ok when we are around him so that he will not feel alone or lonely.
try the same thing to your friend.
good luck.

I was cutter too, and you should talk to your friend and let her heart pour out honey. There are some deep issues that could concern her parents, friends, relatives, who knows, but she needs someone whom she can trust. Someone who can take her seriously, and not rat her out..

okay...here's exactly what you need to do, you have to tell someone. it may be hard to do, but one day she'll thank you..and even though you two might break up, it'll be worth it....wouldn't you rather be friends with her or maybe (unfortunately) ex's, than have a dead girlfriend because you didnt tell anybody? i used to cut, and if my friend wouldn't have told someone, i'd probably be dead, and i wouldn't have the wonderful life i have now.
