For all those who aren't religious, doesn't it reaffirm your belief that the majority of religious people are stupid when they try to refute your arguments about God being imaginary or the Bible being a book of myth by QUOTING THE BIBLE ITSELF? It proves to me that religion is the opiate of the ignorant masses. Haven't they heard of people laughing at them for their circular reasoning? Why do they still do it?

I don't get it either. If a Book can prove itself to be true, without any outside help, there are millions upon millions of Gods and Goddess' and, basically, all us mortals are screwed. No matter which we chose, or if we don't chose any, we're gonna piss off another God or Goddess and they're going to make life hell for us. *_*

Religion is the opiate of the masses. So what? So is television and though you would be loathe to admit it, Intellectual discourse is yet another opiate of the masses.

Without these opiates, we'd be slaves to our work, with nothing to distract us from the short brutality of life. I choose my faith in God over drugs. At the very least I'll live longer.

The bible is true because there are truths expressed within it. Even as a philosophical text you can find answers to many questions, such as why good men suffer and why banal men prosper. Job is worth a million diatribes from the classical philosophers as it explores man's limitations against the universe.

If you read proverbs, you would find truths that you can't easily discount. I"m already breaking one of the maxims, but I'm trying to make you understand. The maxim is "Answer not a fool according to his folly."

So therefore if someone uses the bible to prove the bible, you shouldn't try to disprove them using..the bible.

People believe it because if believed and lived by, it can provide life more abundant. My life is abundant because of my faith and my lord. That's the arguement I would use if you asked me yourself.

The others have the piety but not the imagination.

Still, I humbly submit that you should try reading the thing. Like most non-believers, you are afraid of either being immoral or being judged. Well, God is all-powerful so we are all judged. Whether or not you were a good man is up to you. But being as smart as you apparently are, you can't offer many excuses for bowing away from virtue, except that it was inconvenient at the time.

Peace be with you.

The Bible is the real note, inspite of the reality that many misunderstandings and controversies have resulted from different translations from the Hebrew, Greek and Romans. What the president says he needs were real, and would have sturdy intentions. If mom says so, it really is continually because she needs you to do something you would not in the different case have the understand-how and experience to do. the web would or would no longer be real, reckoning on who's writing on the web. you should understand your elements. Newspapers will be really biased. something printed on paper would or would no longer be real, reckoning on what's written and through whom. All books are not to any extent further real because almost all of them are fiction. commonly authentic books contain aspects of reality. what's mandatory to you isn't any matter if what you assert is real.

I have never heard a religious person say " the bible is true because the bible say so." I believe that is a lie from Hell! The fact that you Think you know more than a christian does is comical within itself when you and ur demonic sect don't believe in Nothing. Religion and the word of God is only hideous to those who can't Be a man and stand up to the truth without fear, in order words, religion is not for weaklings!

I know, religion is becoming such a silly past-time. Shine the bright light of logic and reason on these 'holy' books and they just don't make any sense.

Quoting the bible is such a mindless thing to do. I think the reason they still do it is because they *really* do believe there is a god...

My mouth drops wide open at some of the things that claim...
Total madness... in fact - "Global Religious Delusion" is what it is. So, its the word of god? Do they think "God" had a fax machine?

In years to come, admitting to being 'religious' will be the same as admitting that you think apatite is a good idea or that you think women shouldn't vote... These ways of thinking are in the dark ages... just like religion...

They can't imagine that anyone would question the bible.

One of my friends tried to say the bible was true for each of the following reason (followed by my refutation)

1) The bible is really old. (So is the Egyptian book of the dead.)

2) The bible "says a place is there and you go there and guess what, the place is there". (So I could theoretically write a system of beliefs in an atlas and/or history book to increase it's validity.)

3) God loves us. (I don't understand how this would relate to whether the bible is true or not.)

4) I will pray for you. (Please, plant a tree. Create oxygen instead of wasting it.)

I think you may be confusing superstition with lack of intelligence. Superstition is deeper. Intellectually I know that I have nothing to fear from spiders and cockroaches (other than the potential spread of disease). However, put one on my shoulder and you're likely to see me do a freaked-out dance. What I know intellectually has a hard time crossing over into that irrational, superstitious part of my brain.

So let me put you to the test here. I imagine that intellectually you will acknowledge that you are not going to win any converts by calling them stupid. People are more likely to become defensive of their beliefs and the Bible when attacked, and this strategy in almost all cases will not work and serves only to divide people from one another over the non-issue of who is more intelligent.

And yet, you employ this strategy anyway. I imagine this is similar to my spider dance. It comes from an emotional non-thinking part of the brain that draws you to do something that is irrational when confronting something seen as unpleasant.

People's belief in the Bible, angels, miracles, and an intervening God is usually rooted in a very old belief, one that the culture has supported for eons. If they change, it will be slowly, and my guess is we will need to keep the light on science over superstition for several generations. And let me emphasize: Light, not Heat

Christians believe the Bible is true because the church which was founded by Jesus Christ testifies to that fact, and because anyone with a reasonable degree of intelligence is capable of tracing all the Old Testament prophecies directly to their fulfillment in the person of Jesus Christ, who is God.

I'm glad I've found somone who sees this the way I do. In my Philosophy class, we were debating this issue and I argued your viewpoint, using much less inflamatory language, against a strict catholic. When I pointed out his circular reasoning, he began to get frustrated, raised his voice and ended up leaving the classroom. I took his retreat as a clear sign of my victory in that debate, but most of my classmates thought I was unjustly attacking his religion, and the professor ended the debate there because the class was becoming too polarized. In the end, I got the highest grade in the class and was also the most hated.

Hmm yes, but that's the basis of all of their faith. I suppose they could try to cite some scientific experiments, but there aren't really any extremely good ones that i've seen, because it's a little hard to prove something that is really in the minds of the people. They should maybe be citing some miracles or something though you're right.
