I find it best to do a bit of everything in Ramadan:
1- pray the 5 daily prayers in a mosque
2- I do 10 rik'ats for each prayer-time (e.g. at sunset, i do 3, then i add 7)
3- Read 100 pages of the Qur'an everyday (or more if you can)
4- Meditate about God's creations (i.e. beauty of the world, God's powers, God's qualities)
5- Repeat a few words that are light on the tongue, heavy on the scales (Allahu-Akbar, Subhana-llah, Al-hamdulillah, Istaghfara-llah al-'Aliy el 'Azim, La ilaha illa al-llah)
6- "God, You are the Pardoner. You like to Pardon. So Pardon me" - this prayer is specific to Ramadan (Allahuma anta el 'Afou. Tuhibbu al 'Afou. Fa'fu 'Anni)
7- Salat al Tarawih in a mosque
8- Remind yourself about all the transgressions you've done in your life, then ask for forgiveness and repent. Try to make yourself cry if possible to reach a state of utmost humility.
9-Focus on the few things you want and wish for them - a good time to do this briefly is right before you eat; it will not be rejected if you do.
10-Pray for others if you can - especially for the Muslim nation
11-Pay the prescribe alms. Try to do this everyday. If you can't, collect as much money as you can, and give them to charity on the 27th day of Ramadan. Perhaps you'll get lucky and pay on "The Night of Glory" (laylat al-Qadr).
12- Then meditate on things you would like to do in the future (e.g. memorizing the entire Qu'ran; helping your family...), even things that you can't do at the moment, like giving 1 million dollars, for example, to the poor. Remember, God rewards you even for your intentions, He is the Most Generous, the Most Forgiving.
How much effort you spend for God's sake on Ramadan depends on your love and devotion to Him, as well as your priorities in life. Although this sounds cheesy, the most valuable thing to me is God's love. So i ask Him everyday to love me more, and for me to love Him more, and for Him to make me love the things that He loves, and the people that He loves, so that He can elevate my status in His favour, that is the ultimate Triumph. I get jealous when people are more pious than me, so i push myself harder. In the end, what is more precious than God's love?
Peace be with you.

yeah, i think *soli_man8* has Hit right on the money. what more can i say after him? try to do as he stated, even if u do less but essentially do it with consistency (even if u add just 2 rakah additional nafals in each prayer, do it for every prayer from there on, don't do 10 rakah for one prayer and do none after that). i know i will try to follow some of his tips in this Glorious Month of Ramadan, maybe less than what he stated, as i will be just Starting but i'll try to do it with consistency (i would rather read a Single Page of The Holy Quran each day, than to read 100 one day and none for the remaining days). Peace Be With u.
P.S. ... i would chose soli_man8 for best answer if i were u.

Asslamu Alikum!
in Ramadan you are supposed to spend as much time being close to Allah as possible. you fast, you pray and give zakat. you are supposed to be spiritually conscious all the time and Ramadan is an excellent chance for you to begin doing so.
read the Quran and try to finish it.
may Allah accept from all of us and grant us eternity in paradise!
Ameen.

lots of prayers, you could find any Islamic book store in your city to buy these, you can read lots of Quran. Allah promises to reward the chosen successful ones by giving them place in Jannah (heaven). You will of course try to fast if your age and health allows, zakat, volunteering to help people in any way and many more, peace
