the same reason women smile and change the subject when caught in a lie. Human nature. You smile in a subconscious attempt to overcome the act of lying with charm... change the subject if possible, or just laugh at the thought of being caught. Similar to how children will smile when caught doing something "taboo". There is pain in the act but also pleasure in breaking taboos... subconscious rebellion.

Many people make it more than it is... it is really just a simple reaction to being caught in a rebellious act.

When you get caught in a lye, you get stained another color of course. A strong lye will burn your skin.

by the way, have you had a spelling lesson lately?

I don't think I would smile if I were caught in lye. It is a very alkaline substance & would hurt a lot.

Yeah, it's hard to imagine anyone smiling when caught in lye. Yikes.

They smile when caught in a lie because they think if they act *cute* enough, we will forgive them. DON'T do it! If you reinforce it, that just makes it harder to break them of it later! : )

What makes us smile is....... How can I put this. It's the signal to let you know that we've been busted. Also, that "smile" is our last effort to think of something clever, to get out of being caught. But, manily that "smile" congradulates you on being smarter than we are. Like. "Dang! How did she figure that out"..

I imagine they are nervous and going inwardly "oh boy what do I do now?" Its not because they find if funny but more as a nervous reaction I am thinking...but I am not a man so I am just assuming.

I think it's a sign of total disrespect. They've been laughing at you the whole time behind your back. Now they can finally laugh at you to your face that they've been lying to you. Some people are just bastards.

They think they can get away with it by making the issue appear "small". He's trying to act cool.

They probably know that you spell the word lie, L-Y-E and just are unable to contain themselves.
