I don't know if people have a problem with them or not, but it can be a little embarrassing in conversation, depending on the context. I suppose that is why many choose to shorten it to "Pete" or "Rich" rather than the longer version. I have a friend that was "Dick" as a child and then requested his adult acquaintances call him "Rich". Now I don't know whether to call him Rich or Dick, so sometimes end up unintentionally referring to him as Rich-Dick...which is really not ideal, though somewhat humorous.
I was quite aware and leery of the nicknames and associated terms when naming my children. Unfortunately, unless you want them to feel like a joke all their lives, you need to choose an appropriate and socially acceptable name. Peter and Dick are solid, traditional names, but sadly have the negative connotations connected to them.
But you knew that now, didn't you?

I really love the name Peter, but my husband (who is immature) was like no way. I think Dad's think their sons will be made fun of. As a teacher I have taught plenty of Pete's and Peter's. Never a Dick -- well, at least no one named Dick, maybe some who acted like one....and thus the problem with the name.

Once you get out of high school people are a lot more mature and Peter or Dick might just ending up being your boss or someone a lot richer than you and you just don't have time or energy to worry about stupid name jokes anymore.

Is your name Dick???? Would you mind if it was?? Do you think you would have minded as a teen or in school when everyone was bugging you? Kids are mean enough, I don't think parents should give the other kids a heads up on bugging their child!

It's an unfortunate situation when a defenseless child is named after a nickname for a body part. Poor kid.
