My Company calls them "Ramp Service".
We lovingly refer to them as "Ramp Rats", or "rampers" for short.
Whatever has to be done to an airplane on the exterior is done by Ramp Service. They load and unload the Cargo and luggage, fill the water tanks, and empty the Lavatory tanks. Our guys also clean the plane interiors.
And they marshall the planes in an out with the wands. They get pretty good at bouncing those suckers off the cement and catching them...

I worked for an express carrier and it was the baggage crew who would flag planes in once they landed.
When I got my job, there was an ad in the newspaper for gate agents and baggage handlers. They had a group interview process,
then they called back some for individual interviews,
then they from there whom was going to the training class.
I only lasted as a gate agent for 6 weeks.
I hated the hours and it was too much work for the long hours, working all the holidays,
and lousey pay. I'm glad I didn't last,
the airline industry tanked shortly after and most of whom I worked with lost their jobs.

My daughter use to do that. She worked for US Air in Operations. She had no prior training before getting the job, but she had to learn all the airport codes and was tested on it. She also had to load and unload the planes. After a 2 year of the working outside like that, she changed careers and went back to school.

If you do decide to get a job at the airport, be prepared for them to find out who your first grade girlfriend was. lol
they are flagmen or atleast that is what they call them on an aircraft carrier.

my roommate does that!! he got the job by applying on the jetblue.com website. i'm not sure what his title is, but he does all kinds of other things too. fills the planes with baggage, drives baggage carts, stocks the plane with drinks and snacks.
anyways, i know it's a great paying job and has really excellent benefits (he can fly whereever he wants, whenever he wants - free, great salary, cheap/good health insurance, etc.)

at pbi they are minimum wage anybodies who can speak enough english to pass a first grade level course. most of this job is outsourced since the airlines are broke, therefore the cheapest bid gets the job and hires the cheapest workers who don't give a @#$%. some felonies are hireable.
