Eating healthy is the common answer and the best one.
But when it comes to exercise, it really depends on how much you weigh to start with.
I've found that it's easier for over-weight people, or people who aren't in good shape, to start out with weight training... But don't use "girly" weights because despite what some people say, it's not going to make you too muscular or make people think you're a bodybuilder.... It'll just replace some of your fat with muscle, giving you a "fit" look and it'll build up your endurance for if you want to start running or doing cardio.
The fact of the matter is, some people just can't start doing cardio and/or running right away.. Whether it's because of their weight or the fact that they're just not athletic.
Weight training has kept me in shape my entire life... And it's something that I enjoy. I'd rather go to a gym and lift some weights while listening to music and maybe talking to other people, than go running down the street or look like an idiot, jumping around in my living room or in some cardio class.
