I have very dark brown hair and tried last night to die it a orangish red color...nothing real wierd looking. Anyways, the final result was as if I never colored it at all. I want to try again with a different brand. How soon is too soon to try again? On the new box it shows the result when used on dark brown/black hair so I would assume it should work. I'm obviously inexperienced with this. Please help!

dark brown and black hair are almost impossible to color to a lighter color with a one step box possess from the store. the pigment color of your hair will not be effected by the small amount of bleach that are in these products...even the lightest blond one will not take your hair up to a true finished color and the most you can hope for is a little orphan Annie red..ugh. either love your hair as it is, get a professional (an i am not one) to help or consider some of the better streaking kits that are out now..

actually .. you should have a professional take care of this. you can't go from "dark" to a lighter color without stripping your natural color. someone once explained it to me like this:

you can't take a dark brown crayon and color it on a piece of paper .. and then color over it with a lighter color. it will still be very dark.

made sense to me. you have to "erase" the dark color to get a lighter color to take. this would involve bleaching your hair which is VERY damaging. trust me .. i did this exact thing myself (my hair dark dark brown / black and wanted a light brown color) and it was horrible. the damage is still growing out.

consult with a professional for bleaching / stripping.

good luck!

Was it colored dark? Color will not lift out artificial color. It would have to be pre lightened or bleached to lift to the level you want, then a color put over that.
