i am a Christian and have a good faith in both God and Jesus, but what troubles me is with the story of Adam and Eve. i understand that God had to set some boundaries but i dont understand why the tree of knowledge was off limits, i was always led to believe that aquiring knowledge was a good thing and something that we're all encouraged to do? many thanks.

It's the tree of knowledge of GOOD AND EVIL. Meaning they will know what's right and wrong. God didn't want them to have to constantly battle satan. Knowledge is a good thing, just some of it is to heavy for us to bear.

THe reason for the tree of knowledge to be off limits is because it was God's comman for one and also the knowledge God already knew and did not think that man needed to know it. By taking of the fruit as they did they did recieve that knowledge. They were like children that did not realize there would be consequences for their actions. ANd so the rest of the story is what you read after they ate the fruit. God made us and this world in the image he wanted. And man and woman were to be his friends and love him. By taking of the fruit when they should not have showed our weaknesses. Now we have to try to be better than what we were before.

God never tampers with free will, this is a difficult concept to grasp so i'll do my best to explain. God is in our very minds, yet we have our own way of free will. He needed them to trust him. Its called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil because before they sinned they did not know what was wrong, but only what was good.

More than what explained here, but it was the tree of knowledge of good and bad. Not just a tree of knowledge

Prior to partaking, they only knew good, which was the condition they should have stayed in, until they reached spiritual perfection

Adam and Eve was perfect (complete) physically, but had to be taught the spiritual things.
Satan tempted them and brought forth desire. Using their free will, they chose the wrong path.

The best way to interpret scripture is with scripture.
In Genesis 3:2 The woman said to the serpent, "From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden God has said; "You shall not eat from it or touch it or you will die"

the serpent replied "you surely will not die! {satan deceived Eve by twisting God's words around}
"for God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God knowing good and evil." Genesis 3:5

So according to these verses the tree was off limits because there would be a spiritual death for Adam and Eve (and us their descendants) if they ate from it.

The issue was not the knowledge, but obedience. In order for Adam and Eve to be able to fully love God, they had to be able to choose whether to obey Him or disobey Him.

They freely chose "knowledge" over a loving relationship with their Creator.

The tree was of knowledge of good and bad. God being the creator has the right to decide for us what is good or bad not we for ourselves. Taking fruit from that tree and eating it went beyond them understanding good and bad, it was their deciding to be independant of God and wanting to rule for themselves, it was also disobedience to God.

not merely knowlege - the knowlege of good and evil. be specific. when you think about it, evil has done more to obscure useful, healthy knowlege than anything in history. what if there were no evil? people would be able to understand each other completely. there would be no jealousy, envy, strife, hatred, malice, selfish ambition, etc. what kind of scientific cooperation would be possible in such a society? how great and quick would our accomplishments be? we would undoubtedly be exploring the galaxy by now...among other things. no one would be hungry, or in prison, etc... not all knowlege is good.

God wanted man to trust him for the knowledge not man to search for it on his own which causes pride and separation from GOD.
