I realize he is a puppy, but come on! Twigs, leaves, little things on my rug that I thought I got up with the vacuum cleaner, but apparently not! Will he get out of that phase and just eat what he is supposed to eat or will I have to take him to a dog whisperer??????

Yes, this phase will pass as he grows older. I had a puppy who used to do the same thing; eat twigs, leaves, string, or pretty much anything that I left on the floor! For now you should just get him some good chew toys, and read a little book or two about training your puppy. Or you could look at the website that I listed in the source. All of the other paragraphs below are from the the site.

Biting and Mouthing
Most common in young puppies and new dogs in the household especially in play and while teething. It's up to you to teach your puppy or dog what is acceptable and what is not.

Biting Dogs and Puppies
Most dogs and puppies are generally loving, sweet, adorable, affectionate and wonderful 99% of the time. Only 1% of the time does something specific happen that makes the dog bite. This article will discuss the causes of biting and what you can do to prevent your dog from biting.

Dogs and Puppies Must Learn to Inhibit Biting
First of all, dogs must learn to inhibit their bite before they are 4 months old. Normally, they would learn this from their mother, their littermates and other members of the pack. But, because we take them away from this environment before this learning is completed, we must take over the training.

This is a very typical doggie habit...it's fun!! He may grow out of it but maybe not all the way. A dog's mouth is his 'hand'. When curious about something naturally (like any child) he puts it in his mouth (where else?). He's also probably teething which would increase this behavior. You really don't want to 'cone' him or muzzle him...he's gotta be a curious puppy for awhile! Just start discouraging him soon (NOT punish but gently) from bringing this stuff inside. Get him some toys & chewies because what's coming next are your shoes! THEN get ready for some punishing! lol

You shoud not relent becasue he is just a puppy. That is where people mess up. You need to correct him each and everytime he bites something he's not allowed to. Say something like "LEAVE IT" in a stern, low voice. At first he wont know what it means. Correct him until he does. and give him a chew toy to chew on instead. When he does leave it, praise him and say" good puppy. good boy to leave it" in a baby-talk voice. Sometimes when he does leave it, you can even give him a treat. But don'y do so alot. It may spoil him. Remember, you're the alpha dog and you tell him what he can chew on. Dont let him go becasue he's a puppy. You're telling him its okay, and the problem will only be worse as he gets to be bigger. I hope that helps.

i have a terrier who used to do the same thing!! try these..

when you see him with some thing hes not supposed to have, take the toy away, and tell him NO sternly...dogs can sense nervousness and fear, so be calm. after that, give him one of his toys and when he plays with it, praise him by telling him GOOD BOY, but never pet him when he does this. only pet your dog when he's asking for affection.

sometimes dogs will try to run away when you try to approach them, so don't run. walk towards him slowly. if this doesn't work, DO NOT get frustrated, dogs can sense that and it empowers them, let him know that your the boss!

and no, you won't need the dog whisperer for this =]]

I can't believe your dog is named Toto! My carin terrier is too, but he came with that name. The thing I have learned about Carin's, they are nasty creatures. They eat things they are not supposed to, and they do not like to stay clean long. Eventually he will grow out of that phase, but will still eat nasty things, things you don't want to know about, I think it's all in the breed. :)
