for about 2 months my 7 yr old female cat's upper lip on the right side has been swollen and pink or red. I do not have the money to take her to the vet for another month or so, we just moved and my husband just started a new job. she is an indoor only cat. my neighbor's cat has a swollen lower-lip but the two have never been in contact... has anyone dealt with this befor and what was it? I will be taking my cat to the vet but since she appears otherwise healthy it will have to wait. thanks

This sounds crazy...but does your cats sharp teeth cut into the lip that's swolen?
I had a smelly stray cat adopt me once, and he had horrible "buck teeth" where his canines cut into the bottom lip. He had these little holes in his lip, sort of like healed piercings, that would occasionally get filled with chewed food. If the food stayed in there too long, it would start to , uh, fester...and it would make his lip swell and STINK! It got to the point where I had to clean his lip at least once a day to avoid the infection and the horrible smell.

If your cat does happen to have an abcess, it has to be drained. Sometimes the abcess will burst on its own, but being that it's in the cat's mouth, you dont' want him ingesting all the pus. Most vets will work something out with you if you call ahead of time and explain your situation and offer to make regular payments. If yours won't work with you, it's time to find a vet who puts your pets' interests before his wallet.

In the meantime, you could wet a cotton ball with some Hydrogen Peroxide and rub the inflamed area a couple of times a day. If there is any sort of cut or opening, it will help keep infection at a minimum. And it's okay of Kitty licks at it a bit. A small amount for rubbing wont' make him sick.

Good luck!

Delvyne is right. It is most likely an infected tooth which may have abcessed. It is painful for her and she may stop eating which means she has to see a vet immediately. Try to work out some payment plan or borrow some money. If it gets any worse and isn't treated it will cost more in the end. Do it now.

your cat may have a "rodent ulcer". This is an inflammatory response to an irritant, most likely caused from the oils left in her cat food bowl. If your cat food bowl is plastic, try using a ceramic or metal bowl and wash it frequently-like daily. Cat foods have alot of oil in them to make them taste good and provide essential fatty acids for shiney coats. If this doesn't hjelp, a course of antibiotics may help. Unfortunatley that means a trip to the Vet.

It sounds like your cat has an abscess. You do need to take her to the vet. I understand you do not have the money.

An abscess needs to be lanced and the pus drained. I have done this myself a couple of times. If you can get the swelling drained and start applying antibiotic ointment or peroxide, the cat should do fine. But chances are, that abscess is going to get her sick.

Take her to the vet ASAP or you need to break the swelling with a needle and squeeze out the pus.

please take your cat to the vet, most vets will take a payment plan especially with established clients.
