Why do my dogs prefer to drink any scummy water they can find instead of their fresh water?

Dogs do not think in terms of "scum". Dogs noses tell them exactly what is in that water...essence of female dog, dirt with worm attached, old and rotting grass clippings, a light flavouring of motor oil...to a dog that is a rich bouquet of scent. Why wouldn't they want to see if it TASTED as good as it SMELLS?!

my dogs drink from their bowl. they only look for water elsewhere when their bowl is dry and they are very thirsty.
