No one asks to be abused whether it be physical or mental.
You'll know she is in a mentally abusive relationship if she is showing signs of depression, not active, not talking much, down on herself (i,e. calling herself ugly, fat, nasty, etc.).

If she is very evasive with answering your questions. If she tries too hard to make her one & only sound too good. If she has unexplained marks of any kind on her body & gives dumb excuses for them. If for whatever reason she or her partner make excuses for not visiting or letting you visit them(isolation). If ever you see marks on her, call the police. She doesn't have to press charges, the state will. It is a crime. Also please get her to the Dr. for a ck. up (to make sure she doesn't have leukemia or something awful like that) so it can be documented. Document in words & pictures every single time. I say that because right at first, she may not tell you or even want to admit it to herself. She may even think it's her fault & that if she's a better partner, wife or whatever, he won't do it again. Nobody has a right to hit another person in anger. It is against the law. Especially when it is a man hitting a woman. Men are physically stronger (as a rule) and can be very controlling. I have seen the same thing happen in gay/lesbian relationships. Plese get help for your daughter! There are many resources out there now for this problem. The police can give you this info. for your area.

Wow I wish I could answer your question. I am a parent of a 17 yo boy and I have never thought of that concerning him. Maybe I should, cause I am sure there are abusive girls out there. I have talked many times to him about being respectful of women, and that it is in no way ever OK to lay a hand on her. I know that emotional abuse is just as bad, just does not leave bruises. The only thing I might say to you that might be of help is, if you think she is in one you might trust your so called "women's intuition...

If you notice a change in her normal behaviors. Such as, she keeps to herself more than usual. When they are both around you she " pretends " to be happy. ( you should know if she is pretending just because, because you know how she would normally act.) If she stays away from the family for long periods of time with no contact. If i were you mom, I would pull her aside and talk to her because its not healthy and I was in the same position a year ago and it was my mom that did that with me to give me the strength to leave. And if you think that mentally she is being abused you may want to act quickly because it may be more going on and she is being silent about it. When speaking with her let her know that you are not getting in her business you are just concerned because..... and state your concerns. Believe me if anything is going on you will find out and if her father is in her life he needs to put a little " fear " in her boyfriends heart!!! :)
