Good question in my view. It tell me that you are trying to understand based upon your declared seriouness. In my view I will accept that as a fact for now.
No one goes to hell for sin. Who gave you that idea?
People go to hell, the hell in know as being eternally apart from My God for not accepting My God as God and for not believing He is able to, did do, and will do all that He promised to do for My God says what He means and meansd what He says.
MY frined in this world all have sin, but they can all be forgive by the completed works of my God and by the justification through His created Son, Jesus the Christ.
Even those who do believe in My God and accept His ability as fact do sin. Oh yes, but their sins are set apart by the fact that Jesus did pay the full price for it ro be set apart.
OK in a simple answer is yes and no sepending on your own belief and mind set OK in respect to it being a sin. you do not go to hell for masturbating. No it is not a sin unless someone in authority forbid you to do it and by such you are not honoring for exam[;e youir mother or father. OK. The Bible does not declare it as a sin anywhere. However if you do not do it by faith it is sin for you because all that you do must be done by the faith that it is not wrong for you to do it OK. So If you are convinced that masturbating is wrong for you then or course for you it is a sin but for others who do not see it as wrong, it is not a sin.
I do hope I did help to answer your question, I did it from my view as a "NO" and I am willing to accept the views of others that say I may be wrong. I only request that they try to prove my error by the same book that tells them who goes to hell and who does not. For me that book is the Bible. Maybe they have another book, I do not know.
Now do have a great day and do smile and accept the work of Jesus and you can and will be forgiven of your sins period OK.

Some people mistakenly think that Onan was killed by God for doing that. The Bible says "he spilled his seed on the ground." The problem was that under the law at the time, he was supposed to marry his dead brother's wife and have kids with her to provide heirs for his brother. He spilled his seed, rather than do his duty.
However, Jesus said that looking at another woman to lust after her is adultery. So thinkig lustful thoughts is a problem. However, God will forgive you of your sins if you ask.
