An effective teacher is able to connect with her students. She not only is passionate about what she teaches, but also can read her audience. She monitors what students are understanding, and builds upon knowledge individually toward each student. She constantly reviews prior knowledge to get students ready for the next step. She understands difficulties that her students have, and prepares to help those students before a problem even arises. An example of this is I know some of my students are weaker in math, so I make sure during the direct lesson I have them help me on the board. This gives them a little bit of extra practice and confidence so that I don't have to spend the entire period helping them with each problem. An effective teacher knows both her subject matter and her students well, so that they can come together in a perfect junction of learning.

A good teacher loves her/his subject so much that they never become tired of sharing it with others, but never so blinded by their passion that they forget that those others are human beings too.
