I think that it is important to teach kids responsibility by allowing them to make their own changes and then face the consequences (whether positive or negative).
This type of parenting needs to be started early so that the kids already have experience with consequences that are less serious than when they are older. If they have not had this opportunity before then perhaps you can allow them the chance to choose in small steps.
It is hard to watch a child fail or be unsuccessful, but if you allow it then it can stop them from making bad choices that can ruin their life. If you always do the choosing for them they will not learn until it may be too late.

As long as your living on my dime you don't get choices.Your in a training ground for life.If you want purple hair and baggie or ripped clothes go find your self some where else to live.
Your Parents friends will be the ones giving out jobs not your peers. What makes you think High School makes you wise enough to choose any thing. As long as your not being abused your parents have the obligation to set down rules as part of you social education. Investigate Walt Disney's dress code and work rules if you think your parents are to hard.
Calculate what your room and board cost and divide that by the hours you are in school. That's your pay check. Your parents are spending a bundle to make you a contributing member of society. Shape up and stop whining

I totally disagree with Georgie! But I completely agree with Melanie. And I am old now, but I have no bad feelings about kids wanting to express themselves with the style of clothes they wish to wear, color of their hair, body piercings, studs, or whatever. I actually get a kick out of it, even at my age! I wish things were more open like that when I went to school. Perhaps Georgie has some problem with life in general? Hey Georgie, let your hair down and live a little! Life is too damn short for you to be an old maid. Did anyone whom you are stereotyping ever threaten you in any way? All kids deserve a chance in life. I, my dear Georgie, have had mine. And by the way it sounds, you've also had yours. Have a good day/night!
