I saw this 6 legged insect today on a shore of a fresh water lake in Utah. It was approx. 1.5 inches long. The back 1/3rd of body was striped like a bumblebee.wasp. The upper half of body was rather grub-like with a pale whitish "neck" and a red head. It did have long black antenna? Any ideas what it might be or where I might look to find out?

Maybe if you do a google image search for bees you could find an archive with an extensive collection of insect photos beyond just bees. Or try putting the names of a bunch of insects in a web (text) search and trough in the words "photo", " archives","Galleries", etc.

How close are you to BYU? Could you take it to the entomology department? I did some work and found the science department of our nearest university and send them photos and get critters identified with some regularity. Mostly it is snakes where I live, but some insects, lizards etc. The Parks and Wildlife department would be another good resource, I have used them on occasion. Just get a good photo, send it their way. They LOVE that stuff. Gets them out of their humdrum day to day stuff.

Entomology is the study of insects. You could try your local library or university.
