In your question I didn't see any reason to assume (as some of the other answerers have) you to be an atheist, but apparently you have doubts about organized religion, as do I. While it's true that many hungry people are fed and clothed by religious organizations, it has been my experience that the charities of the churches are mostly after converts, so they can garner more power and wealth. For example, a homeless person in my town cannot eat at the local Rescue Mission if they haven't attended the pre-meal sermon, even if they're only a couple of minutes late. There are many non-religious charities, such as the Bill Gates Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, etc. that need not proseletyze to gain adherents to an ideology as a motivation to help the needy.

Why don't the churches spend more for charity instead of elaborate church buildings, and such? Why do Christians (and everyone else) spend much more at the shopping malls than they do to help the needy? I think that people in general just don't really care about any but themselves and their own loved ones, and as long as they don't need help, people are content to just live their puny lives and (hopefully) go to Heaven when they die.

So tell me...

WHAT ARE YOU DOING? ((Besides complaining on Yahoo!Answers?))

Seems to me, it's the Christians that are out there in the missionary field...and they are feeding the hungry; Along with other religions.

What about the millionaire Atheists? Why can't they also help?

So again, tell me what it is you are doing to help? If you aren't offering solutions, perhaps you are part of the problem.

You know...poverty exists to keep people down. It has to do more with their governments than anything else. If you keep someone uneducated and poor...they can't fight as well or vote for change.

Do we have enough food in the world today to feed everyone? Yes, we do but if we send it to them and their government steals it, keeps it or doesn't distribute until it has gone bad...what are we supposed to do?

Please be a part of the solution and stop complaining about the problem.

It is so refreshing to read this and thank you for your thoughtful words. However if we were to remove the religious structures from the world, just who would feed the hungry? From the tone of your text I assume that you know the homeless people in your neighbourhood and go out of your way to make sure they get warm rooms in winter and minimal medical attention. But speaking of the wider context of your thesis, would it not make more sense if our respective governments stopped stock piling weapons of mass destruction and paid more attention to the world's poorest people? And would it not make more sense if we stopped buying Coca Cola and Macdonalds and Medicines that have been tested on Third World People.
Your argument is valid, but one fears that you are scape-goating religion when there are far bigger fish to fry.
Shalom.

There is already enough money and enough food to feed every hungry person in the entire world. The problem is not some religion. The problem is greed, power and all the money wasted on war and weapons.

If people did not steal the money for religion - they'd steal it through taxes, or some other way.
People are mistreated because people want them to be.
Why, I do not know.
Well, possibly people get high on the power over others.
(not high like drugs... )
Humans are here for such a short time, that power is very intence, and it is true: power corrupts.
Sorry...

Christians give money to support the poor and homeless. I support an orphanage in Africa and a local homeless shelter with real money. Amazing, huh?
