That is just his persoanlity. Someday he will be a very shy 15 year old housecat who never comes out from under the bed. It is just his nature. Cats have a mind of their own.

I think he needs a buddy. Go to a shelter or humane society and meet the cats there. Ask the adoption people about the background of the cats up for adoption. Frequently they will know something about them. Pick another cat who may be slightly on the shy side or one who gets along well with other cats.
Do not get a kitten. That would simply overwhelm your cat. Find one that is one, two, or three years old (I wouldn't pass up a four or five year old either if it would seem to fit with his shy personality.)
Of course you need to find the new cat attractive and want it to join your household.

When I got my cat Tennessa From the vet it took a while for her to get used to the place you cat is just under a bit of pressure, So JUst let him know he is safe pet him alot and stuff my tennesa is now 13 She Likes a lot of places that are genneraly quit like under the bed, But when they get happy they come and jump in ya lap purring.
Also My cat hides when strangers come over, But that is to be expected from a somewhat shy cat, TRUST ME the outgoing cats dont behave worth a crap whereas the shy ones gennerally behave VERY well.

Another cat might be just the thing to make him come out of his shell & be more social.....giving him a feline friend to bond with OR another cat could just terrify him. AND going with a kitten as a buddy is still is no guarantee.....your cat could cuddle or eat it! What's your cat's history....that is probably a key factor! Where did you get him? Could he have been abused? If you do try a buddy a young cat.......about 12-14 weeks might be good.....or might be overwhelming but definately I'd avoid an adolescent or older cat who might challenge or attack yours. Good luck.....wish I could help more.

Did you're taking him to the vet for a examine-up? Has there been any ameliorations in his environment lately? from time to time cats change their behaviour as a results of stress or ailment. If he's healthful and has only taken up a foul habit, there are various belongings you could do to interrupt him off this. My first idea is that even no matter if it really is enormous, one clutter field isn't that a lot for 3 cats no count number how a lot you clean it. Do you've area for yet another clutter field? it could be a common length one. yet another element is shop him far off from the grimy laundry basket. from time to time previous, human sweat can faintly mimic cat pee, which will make the cat flow there contained in the first position - and then it is going to change right into a habit. I had one cat who did this at one aspect. you do not ought to shop him far off from the laundry perpetually, only till he forgets it really is a "pee spot" (my laundry pee-er is now 13 years previous and has saved to his clutter field for the previous 11 years). clean the tub with a purifier that receives rid of organic and organic smell and rinse thoroughly. If conceivable shop the cat out of the lavatory (again only till he forgets about it being a "pee spot") or placed something contained in the tub it really is uncomfortable for him to step on. best of success with him.

getting another cat may help and it may not. some cats are just not social, it has taken one of my cats 6 years to let other people pet her. i adopted another sometime ago that was in a household with another cat and 2 dogs and i was told he was not friendly. it took him one year here to become extremely affectionate with people and he lives here with 2 cats and a dog. some cats warm up and others do not, if he is friendly with you that all that really matters.

I think getting a female cat will do the trick. Getting another male would not be good. They will most likely become territoral. You don't want that. Be sure to get them fixed if you do get a female. You don't want any kitties.
