Did your ex say that he saw you break the window? If he did, then that's considered eye witness testimony. An eye witness gives the police probable cause for an arrest. Any other investigation will be conducted between the arrest and your trial. If there is no other evidence, then there is a good chance of you being found not guilty. But if you have any witnesses, you need to let your attorney know who they are and how to contact them. That way, your attorney can have that person(s) testify in court.
And you do need to get a lawyer. Never try to handle any legal situation involving the court on your own. It doesn't work. That's why we have lawyers. We don't necessarily like them, but we do need them sometimes.

There is a catch-all charge known as being in the wrong place at the wrong time. No investigation is required because otherwise there would have to be a detective at every crime scene, and there aren't enough to go around - detectives being considered smarter than the average cop - and smart being at a premium.

Most times, the investigation is completed after the arrest. This will determine whether charges will be laid or not.
