you should never take meds without consulting a doc. just because it is good for your mom does not mean it is good for you. Could be quite harmful. Ok, I don't know how serious it is but it will get better and for sure you don't need a sleeping pill for this.

Diazepam or Valium is dangerous especially if you haven't taken it before. Diazepam has a half life of 72 hours meaning it takes 3 days for a one half of a milligram to get out of your system. If you take Diazepam for sleep you will most likely feel hung over for the next couple of days depending on what the milligram is in the Valium. You'd be better off taking a PM sleep medication. Valium is NOT for sleep. Pleasant dreams.

The nurse is right about the half-life and that it is not a hypnotic per se.

However, diazepam is an extremely safe tranquilizer and will calm you down remarkably. 1mg diazepam for every 10kg of body weight is a good rule-of-thumb. If its not enough, dose again in 90min.

Given a choice between diphenhydramine 25mg and 5-10mg diazepam, take the diphenhydramine. Probably good to have an antihistamine on board.

It's not your prescription and the dose may not be appropriate for you. My daughter took my medication behind my back and ended up in respiratory arrest. There I was doing mouth to mouth rescue breathing for 30 minutes before the paramedics arrived. Diazepam also is a respiratory depressant. Take over the counter Benadryl aka diphenhydramine 25mg. It's safer and please don't use other people's prescriptions.
