Doktor is a generic term, like in English that could mean physician, psychiatrist, or educational degree.

Artz I've seen used as a suffix to say what type of doctor. Actually alot easier to know what type in German than English.

Frauenartz- Gynecologist (Woman doctor)
Tierenartz- veterinarian (Animal, or pet doctor)
Kinderartz- Pediatrician (Child doctor)

Oh btw all nouns, or words used as a noun are capitalized.

Hello -

Correct are
Herr/Frau Doktor for anyone who has a doctorate, whether they have a PhD or an MD.

NOTE: You would never call anyone who is laywer, etc Herr/Frau Doktor, unless they hold a doctorate (PhD). Only if they have the doctoral degree, if not, then that is a little bit like ridiculing them...

Please never, ever use "Fraeulein"! Only as a joke to someone in their teens. Fraeulein is dated and has been abolished from all official forms, etc.

Colloquial German: you can use Arzt/Aerztin or Herr/Frau Doktor; no difference. Just like you would say in English, I need to see the doctor. I muss zum Arzt/zum Doktor.

I think Doktor sounds a bit more like what you would say to a child... Uncle Doctor...
If you use Arzt you are always on the safe side.

Hope this helps!

Some (older) medical doctors may not have a doctorate but you would still call them Herr/Frau Doktor, as one is polite. :-)

PS: If they are specialised it would be:
1) Frauenarzt ("women's doctor")
2) Tierarzt (vet)
3) Kinderarzt ("kids doctor")

Arzt is a medical doctor. Doktor is the correct title, but could also be a PhD or something.

"Arzt" is a noun referring to an MD, but you wouldn't address him as "Herr Arzt". In German, you don't address a doctor as "Doctor So-and-So" but as "Mr./Miss/Mrs. Doctor So-and-So". This doesn't apply exclusively to doctors of medicine--in Germany, you call all lawyers, professors, philosophers and other graduates who have the equivalent of a PH.D., an LLB or any other advanced degree "Herr Doktor" (or "Frau Doktor" or "Fräulein Doktor", as the case may be).
