To the US Army the Thanksgiving holiday is very special. Officers and cadre wear their blues and with their wives they volunteer to work the chow line at the mess halls. At least this is how it was done for us at Fort Gordon, GA. It was very nice, the food was top notch and we had the day off. No training, no details unless you got in trouble and were on restricted duty.
I remember that my last Thanksgiving at a training base they even had an ice sculpture for us at the mess hall. For some misterious reason the ice sculpture ( a huge swan) disappeared halfway through the dinner service and reappeared around midnight in front of my barracks (B company, 447th signal). Right at midnight the swan took a dive from the third floor. It was spectacular.
I highly doubt your son will make it home for Thanksgiving, since he is under training. He should have off from a day or so before Christmas until January 2nd.

While I was in training I was on a base that had alternate down Fridays, every other Friday we had off. They made sure they worked things out so we had a 4 day weekend over Thanksgiving. We were fed well and could get all three colors of meat from the turkey (loaf), dark, white, and pink. Sorta like a Neapolitan turkey, chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.

Well, since he is in AIT (job training)...he wont get leave; or get to come home. They will get some "down time", and the dining facility where they eat all their meals will have a really nice set up for the soldiers also. They will probably also have a pretty liberal pass policy in effect, so he can get off post and away from the Army for awhile.
If I were you, I would let him know by mail or e-mail if they have access where you will be at what times on turkey day so that he will know where to call when he gets the chance.
