How can I find the names of men from Blyth Northumberland, who served with the Royal Engineers during W.W.1 ?

I believe my Great Grandfather served with them, but I have not had any luck finding this information. I know he was a Lance-Corporal and I do have his service number, but this is all I know about him.

Extremely difficult. Ironically, if he was killed during the First World War, you have a good chance of finding his details, through a publication called 'Soldiers Died During the Great War' (this can be accessed on the website www.1837online.com).

If he survived the war, then your task is a lot harder. Surviving Army service records from the First World War are held at the National Archives in Kew (see www.pro.gov.uk). However, the operative word here is 'surviving', as these were among the records damaged in 1940 when a bomb hit the Arnside Street repository where they were stored. There is now no guarantee that your great grandfather's service record survives.

It's possible the Northumberland Country Records Office might have contemporary information on those who enlisted during the Great War, but this is something of a long shot.

Having his name and service number should get you the info you need. Contact British WW1 Army Records Office, London; dont know if they have a website, but they were very helpful ideed when I was looking for where my Uncle was killed in 1943.
