it is a fighting force, and probably a very effective one, however its arguable its a regional force, and it would have severe difficulties operating outside the Northern Atlantic.

the UK would almost certainly be unable to to fight the Falklands war in the 21st cnetury. why?
>surface fleet reduced (number of frigates & destroyers reduced)
>merchant marine reduced in size (there are fewer vessels able to support the Royal Navy to ship troops & supplies
>helicopter aircraft carriers and sea harriers being decommissioned imminently, with the proposed replacement (2 aircraft carriers not due for completion for several years) its arguable that 2 aircraft carriers gives insufficient cover (effectively there will be only one (and occasionally 2 carriers) in service as they go through the normal cycle of refit)
>service morale has been severly affected by increased duties imposed on them by the governent with reduced resources (both men and equipment).

dont kid youself, the British forces in the Falklands winged it, and got away with it. all credit to them, but it was close run thing, had the Argentinians sunk a carrier or troop transporter Britains weakness would have been exposed and the political will (and public support) might have folded.

'Mark J' try Yahoo Search to give you the correct info about the Falkland war. The Royal Navy is great but could never fight another Falklands war as the present pinko government have reduced the Navy so much. Still they catch drug runners very well.

The Royal navy can sort of make up a part of a Nato antisubmarine battle group. Bit of a joke really.

It could fight for the falklands again but would lose, less than half the number of ships feft that at time of falklands.

The Navy have not fired a shot in anger for 60 years. In the Falklands they lost men because they couldn`t make their defence systems work against missiles. It is time they did as they did in the first world way (1914-18 ) trained them as infantry, then their wives would have something to cry about when the ships leave port. At the moment all the wives have to worry about is what their men are up to on their sunshine cruises!

The Royal Navy as of currently does more of policing international and home waters. Currently there isn't a great need for Navy troops in the war, even though they do have a place in the "sandbox".

primarily its a fighting force, their trained for combat. at the moment the navy doesn't seem to be needed in conficts around the world so policing international waters is there main concern. and yes british forces could still win the falklands even with depleted numbers of troops coz we're one of the best forces in the world.

the navy used to be great but now its only really coastal protection. were hanging on by the skin of our teeth and only have the bare minimum of shis to keep us in the un. the goverment are showing no interest whatsoever in the armed forces, they really need to sort out their priorities. at the moment there is no chance of fighting over the falklands, the only thing we do do, is help america defend the oil plats in the gulf

Still a fighting force, but alot smaller since the good old days . Over all, they still are about the #2 in the world. (Russians are broke & in port 70% of the time). Could they fight 1982 again??
It would be alot harder, but superior skill & arms would win out. The logistics would be a nightmare however.

All our armed forces flex to the needs of the current situation and the role of the Navy has changed. b
Battles are not fought at sea any longer and the enemy has changed a great deal and is much closer to home. Our Navy could well play is logistical part in any battle and is still a force to be reckoned with. Nations would still cry 'you sank my battleship'
