There have been more 5-star generals, but only two where the "General of the Armies" as stated above.
Very nice explanation at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_of_the_Army_(United_States)
The mnemonic "Be My Little General" is also used in the US Army, that is how it was taught to us in basic training.
By the way, notice a Major outranks a Lieutenant, yet a Lieutenant General outranks a Major General. This is on purpose because the old name for the Major General rank was Sergeant Major General. You can read about it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergeant_Major_General

Brigadier (1 star),
Major Gen (2 stars),
Then into the super ranks where there are very few!
Lt. General (3 stars),
General (4 Stars)
and General of the Armies (5 Star, which hasn't been used since WWII. I think Eisenhower was the last)

General (GEN) is a 4 star rank
Lieutenant General (LTG) is a 3 star rank
Major General (MG) is a 2 star rank
Brigadier General (BG) is a 1 star rank
The 5 star rank or General of the Army has not been used since WWII.
At note to DKlyde...additional 5 star generals include Eisenhower, Marshall, Arnold (Army Air Corp then to the USAF), Bradley. Also after the Civil war US Grant was made General of the Army later followed by WT Sherman. Back then it was a 4 star rank.

Brigadeer General, Major General, Lieutenate General, (4 star) General.
If you wanna remember what order they go in, think if this acronym BMLG: Be My Little General. Thats what helped me learn them when I first had to.
