Strangely enough This question reminded me of basic training. It still made me scratch my head when guys got to the pool and could not swim. I mean it is the Navy? Ships, water, they sink?

Yes, they teach non swimmers. It's a requirment to finish training. As I recall the drill was, jump feet first off a 30ft high dive platform. swim 100 yards, float 5 mins.

Ps. this also why they have bell bottom pants. In a emergency, you take off your pants to make a life vest.

Well, the Navy requires you to be a 3rd class swimmer. Not sure what the requirements are to be a 3rd class, but they apparently require you to swim a certain amount of distance. As for swimming lessons in boot camp, I'm not sure. I heard that they only monitor and record your swimming capabilities when they tell you swim from point A to point B.

I would ask a navy recruiter or someone at the navy about this. I suspect though that they probably do not teach you to swim.

I bet that would be more harsh than if you were caught with a jelly doughnut in your footlocker!!

Go to a pool and get the hang of it-whether the Navy gives swimming lessons or not, you should go in there as a "shark".

I suggest learning to swim before joining. Any Y would be able to help you with that.

please please don't join the navy or marines if you can't swim...don't ask your recruiter cuz he is going to say yes. The military test on a GO/NO GO policy... meaning if you get a no go you won't be graduationg basic training... learn to swim prior to joining the navy or don't join... that's the best advice i can give you.

im not so sure that they will teach you to swim as much as they will ensure you learn to. you only have to swim 50yds and float for 5min.
