I assume you're going to cry later, but can't do it in front of others, right? In that case I would go with what J said, try deep breathing, suck in your breath and maybe hold it...I have also bitten the inside of my cheek or lip but this isn't a very good idea because the mouth is full of bacteria and those can get infected easily.
Maybe try popping a piece of gum or a hard candy before hand - something to focus on instead of crying, until you can get somewhere safer to express yourself.
Try mental techniques like counting backwards from 100 by sevens, or reciting something you've memorized like a favorite movie or something. These are a couple ways to distract your thoughts temporarily; you might think of others.
Don't fight them back too long because they will come out in some manner, and the longer you hold it in, the worse it will be when it comes out. Others will notice eventually anyway. But these tips might help in the short term.

It embarasses me to cry in front of people, so I understand where you are coming from. Distract yourself from the situation. Since you know its coming up, then do something special that day to make yourself feel better. Dress nice, be confident then maybe it will be easier not to let your emotions get the best of you.

Either bite your upper lip or hold it down tightly with one of your fingers.
Wear sun glasses and look away from the situation that your think will make you cry.
Think about something totally different .
Put Vick's Mentholatum cream up each nostril.
Stare straight ahead and mentally remove yourself from the situation.

Well, I can't cry during lab at school, I mean I could, but it would make me look unprepared and idiotic when they're screaming at me. (I'm in nursing school btw, and lab time can be heck) What I do is just suck in my breath, bite my cheeks on the inside of my mouth, and think about something great. For me, I think about graduating, but you can think of whatever makes you happiest.

Well I hold back alot... And how I do it is I think come on you now you are strong! Don't be weak... Cying never solves anything and sometimes it makes it worse.. My eyes may well up but nothing comes out and if I think it is I look up and close my eyes like I am in deep thought and it goes away alil
