Atheism is only an excuse for people to hide from their need of religion. I have seen atheists, spiritualists, and every other 'ist call out to the God of the Bible when facing death. Everyone has a religion of some sort regardless of how much they deny it.

Amen! Atheist only say they don't believe in God so there is no accountability in their lives. They are trying to turn off the little voice in their head that tells them they are wrong. (They argue with him all the time here:) It is the easy way out. Living by your own rules. But, You know like you say "There are no atheist in fox holes"

Thank you for your input...Believers of all types are out-numbered in this forum.

Self worth is more important. The way you live your life is more important. So many religions have different views and if there is not one out there for you that you can stand up and say 100% I am behind every word - then I say if you live your life to a good moral standard I'll shake your hand. Why should anyone join a religion because it is a good thing to do? We are all different and our views on faith are our own.
As for being weak-willed I would say they have great strength of mind - not joining this forces of others because that is the way it is done. Perhaps it is those who must join because that is the way of life hold the term weak-willed for like sheep they follow others rather than think for themselves.
As for Spiritualists for goodness sake learn what the recognised and legal right of this religion is before you state they hold no belief in God for in this case "you know not of what you talk about"!

Have you seen everybody die? I have seen people die who have NOT called out to "the God of the Bible" or any other God. Even if people in extremis did call out to God, what does that signify? It could mean much or little. Some people might say "oh god" when they stub their toe, but it does not indicate a deep spiritual need. It just indicates a need for some expletive. I would not like,on the basis of this kind of evidence, to make sweeping comments that everyone has need for religion, but even if they did, I cannot see how you can assume it is Christianity they have need of.

The fact is that for many people CHRISTIANITY is the religion they have found wanting. It has not answered their "NEEDS". They have rejected it.

Many people have searched for a belief system that satisfies them. Some have looked in religion, some have looked elsewhere. Some have found something that satisfies them. Sometimes it has been a Religion, sometimes it has not.
God is not the answer for all of us. You do not have to believe me when I say it, and you probably won't. But it means that you are not able to make the imaginative leap and understand what it is to be someone else.

I can believe that you believe. What prevents you from believing that I do not believe? I do not need God. How can I when I don't believe in him? How can I need a phantasm? a nonexistent entity? I certainly do not need religion, which I believe to be an evil. An opiate. Religious institutions are not of no value, but are of a decidedly negative value, they are divisive and dangerous.

Yes, I do need to have a philosophy; I, like most people, perhaps, want to have some understanding of the world, some coherent picture of reality. BUT IT DOES NOT HAVE TO INCLUDE RELIGION, OR ANY GOD YET INVENTED.

I don't know why you felt you had to be abusive, but weak willed is not an epithet that bothers me much, and you do not appear to have justified it.

I'm curious about something.
Exactly how many people have you seen die?
Are you a doctor?
I'm very serious about this. Could you please edit your question with a response because, and no offense, but I don't think you've "seen atheists, spiritualists, and every other 'ist call out to the God of the Bible when facing death"
How many people first hand have you seen die?
Thanks for reading this.

Definition of Religion (1) : the service and worship of God or the supernatural (2) : commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance. (merriam-webster online dictionary)
Even though you are not asking a question, but stating your narrow uniformed opinion; I would ask you to read a book or two and get your head out of your @$$. Not everyone is committed to worship a supernatural being e.g. god and therefore not everyone is observing devotion to the same. You must see a lot of death everyday to see every kind of 'ist' die after you have had long discussions with them establishing their take on the supernatural before they pass away. You need to get away from all the death and go toward the light.

Hmmm, it takes a strong personality to withstand the barrage of religious belief on this planet. As for 'spiritualists' calling out to God on their deathbed, all the ones I've met were mainly Christian in orientation, and believed in God, so it's no surprise that they would be calling on God in their last hours. As for the other 'ists', what were they? If they had a belief in a monotheistic deity, of course they would be calling out to that, as perhaps would the polytheistic deity believers, as there is usually a 'Godhead' at the top of their belief system.
As I've never seen an Atheist die, as you apparently have, I can't comment, I only have your word for it. In fact, I only have your word on it altogether.

So you actually seen someone of each 'ist religeon die?

How do you know they were calling the god of the bible, and not their own personal god?

I will say it for the millionth time--Just because you are not a bible thumping christian, does not mean you are atheist.

Do you know how close to death I was? They had to pump Magnesium Sulfate directly into my veins for days just to make sure that I wouldn't have a deadly seizure. On top of the very real possilibity of DEATH, my kidneys were failing and my pituitary was swelling up so badly that it was pressing on my optic nerves and damaging my vision. I was anemic and hypertensive and pissing brown, toxic urine...

And not ONCE did I ask your or anyone elses deity to save me.

You can babble about people "needing" your god all you want, kiddo, but that doesn't make the concept of a "god" any less nonsensical and impossible and completely IMAGINARY.

Religion is what allows people to hide. Atheism sets people free.

I'll agree with this to a point. Atheism doesn't necessarily mean no belief at all, just that they aren't sure exactly what to believe in or why they should, so they don't. It's still a freedom of religion not to have one. Don't be so close minded as to disregard these persons as people. Maybe they are smarter than we are, because they aren't willing to fall in line with the masses, but rather have their own free will and original thoughts on the matter.

1. Spiritualists believe in a Divine. Of course they will call on it.

2. Since when have you seen so many atheists or spiritualists or whatever "ists" face death? Um, and *how*?

why do those with god feel the need to bang on about this? I can honestly say I have no need for religion, life is, as they say, too short! As for those who are calling out in the face of death - maybe they are blaspheming - Jesus, i didn't see that car coming, for example.
