i don't know if i'm just being silly, but, i'm on a diet and excersize program, and last night i cheated on my diet by eating a meal right before sleep. i ate about a 500 calorie meal at midnight, and then i went to sleep. and when i weighed myself today, i was 5 lbs heavier! i think that's too much to gain in just one day, and my weight normally does not fluxuate that much during the day. is it because i cheated on my diet last night? man, i'm so mad! arrrg, i'm trying so hard to lose weight. also, i hit a plateau, where i'm having a super hard time losing anymore weight, what can i do now to keep losing weight until i reach my target weight? thanks for you time!

Calm down, please. A few things to remember:

1) Bathroom scales are not very accurate to begin with.

2) Everybody's weight fluctuates from day to day, and even during the day. But as Rawrrr said, 500 calories will not add five pounds. It could easily be a water retention thing.

3) Plateaus are normal, and of course they're frustrating.

4) Cheating is also normal and will drive you crazy if you let it.

Anyway, I bet you feel better just for asking this question. Here's an idea: For the next week or two, just keep doing all the things that have been successful so far, while not worrying too much about the number on the scale. You can start tracking that again when weight loss resumes. And if you keep exercising and eating right, it will resume. Best of luck to you.

5 lbs. is a whole lot of calories to gain in one day, consider that 1 lb. is 3500 calories, I doubt that you took in this many calories in one day! It may be fluids and it should all even out soon. The scales are a difficult thing with which to measure your progress. When ladies come to lose weight we measure some target areas, this is a better way. You will be fine.

Are you sure that your scale is accurate? Also, take into consideration that it could just be water weight. There is no way that eating an extra 500 calories is going to put 5lbs on you overnight.

i doubt it was from just one meal...but i guess that will teach you a hard lesson not to eat that late and go right to bed! lol...um after hitting a plateau is best to decrease your calories and increase your exercise..that will help you get past the plateau...maybe your scale was just off some times scales fluctuate...good luck, don't freak out, just get back on the bandwagon and do your best!! sounds like your doin pretty good tho

It's probably water weight. Try not eating that late and drinking lots of water to help flush your body. If you retain too much water, try a water pill but be careful as flushing too much water is not healthy.

It's just water weight. No way does someone gain that much in one night. It will go away. Drink lots of water (cut back on salty foods).

It's water and a large bowel movement that hasn't passed yet.

Tomorrow you will be 5 pounds lighter. Happens to women all the time.

There is no way you gained 5 lbs. in one day. Get a new scale.
