Many teenagers/young adults have committed suicide while on them. Plus a lot of the side effects (i.e. weight gain) cause more depression, therefore making it an endless cycle

A lot of people may think that you can become dependent on them and it could be masking a larger problem. I disagree however the big controversy started with Prozac and someone using the so called Prozac defense in a murder case. Prozac and other drugs of that category were relatively new and no one knew a whole lot about them so they tried to use it as a defense...they later discovered that Prozac does not make anyone kill or do outrageous things.
Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors have helped a lot of people to find a balance in life (me included) and I have never had any side effects. I think it was a lot of misinformation and hysteria that led to the bad rap.

Some people take them when therapy and exercise will work better for them. Some people take them and have toxic reactions or other negative changes that affect them temporarily or the rest of their lives. People will always focus on the negatives of anything slightly taboo, such as seeing psychiatrists or anyone for mental health issues. There really are people who believe some strong things about mental health and they scorn psychiatry and psychology. So the antidepressants? They'd scorn that too.
