In patient is usually 21 days minimum and its after a 4-7 day detox. Some people choose to go home after detox and do the rest with a local counsellor. The success rate is much higher for inpatient care.

A very close family member of mine is in "in -patient" treatment right now.
Inpatient means tougher rules. Inpatient consists of a daily schedule. You will be a part of a household where you will have chores and be expected to help the house run smoothly. Every day there are meetings, and groups, and usually counseling sessions. A good place will also have an on-site physician.
Basically everyday you are accounted for. It is noce, because it gives you no room to fall back on a plan. It also connects you with lots and lots of people who are going thru the same thing you are experiencing. Because you see these people in rough times, deep friendships are always made. You will also meet people who you can call on (like a sponsor)
You can find support and sponsors in outpatient meetings, but really thats all outpatient is. You will pretty much live your life as usually and attend meetings 3-7 times a week.
If you have a choice, and are serious about recovery, I would recommend inpatient over outpatient, although outpatient groups can be very helpful.

Most inpatient treatments involve a medical detox, easing the physical addiction, and keeping you locked up unable to slip and get your drug, the hard part is the mental cravings that pop up, you can then ease into out patient treatment where you will identify your triggers and deal with them. If alcohol is the drug of choice medical detox is a must one can die from severe alcohol withdrawal

It really depends on what the addiction is. Meth, coke, heroin... In patient is better. I was told by our local treatment facility that the best plan is in Patient treatment for 3-6 months. Then 3-6 months in a facility that allows you to go to work/school, go out in the evenings, but return by certain time and follow rules while working with a counselor. Then the plan would be to go to a half-way house for 12months. The best advice I can give you is call your local treatment facility usually they will answer questions with out any one asking for names if your request to remain anonymous. I have family who is goin through this right now and another good advice is to move after treatment. The person needs to get away from that scene. Friends can offten pull them down again.

It is my understanding that out-patient care has a higher success rate probably because you are focusing on your healing. Do it once (hopefully) and do it right. God Bless
