Al qaeda isn't as strong as they were before but rather it's the fundamental extremists that is currently growing in strength. It's like this: Every time you try to swat out a hot spot the flames of insurgency spreads. The Islamic world has always been at war with rivaling religions and land has been taken over from other nations only to be reclaimed. It's been going on for at least two-thousand years. It wasn't a bad decision take the war to Iraq just think of where all the terrorists would be if we were only fighting the battle in Afghanistan. I do however believe that we should have put more troops in the beginning. Do you think the Pakistani government would be able to maintain stability and support us in the global war on terror? As it is now Musharraf is trying to hold onto power with out being over thrown by his own people.
We would of still had the same problem maybe even worse if we were not taking the two pronged approach.

Reports I have heard/read indicate that Al Qaeda is virtually powerless. It has become decentralized and has been reduced to scattered cells operating virtually independently. Any recent terrorist activity has been the work of independent groups, often nationals (as in England recently - these were home-grown terrorists). The suicide bombings and other attacks you hear about in Iraq on a daily basis are the work of insurgents and Shiites against Sunnis, or Sunnis against Shiites - they have nothing to do with Al Qaeda. They are targeting each other, not Americans.

I reject your premise. It doesn't take a large force to kill 30 people in a market. it takes a car, an artilliary shell. and a freak willing to push the button. just because it happens 3 times a week or so doesn't mean AQ is very strong.

Because they promote from within.
They probably have a chain of command - and replace them when they get captured or killed.
Why is that so hard for your little brain to figure out?
They aren't going to quit just cause.
