I am worried about his health. I know see a Vet. But this is my hubbys "puppy" and he does not want me to do anything, The question is he is at least 10 years old. We adopted him as an adult, but the last few months, we can not keep weight on him. He is getting really skinny,(not worms) And he won't eat like he used to. He is not in pain or anything, but I think the end is near. I do not want to talk to my hubby unless I know we have to put him to sleep. It will bring tears to the whole family.(i am crying just asking the question) But what do you think? We love him very much and do not want to see him go, but want what is best.

Well if he is no pain then let him until his end comes.I think it would be a lot better.Imagine if you would put him to sleep and he could of been with you for more days, weeks, months,or maybe years. So don't do that. Now if he was in pain then I would personally put him to sleep so he wouldn't be suffering.Good luck and try to be strong.

I would take the dog to the vet and make sure that he is not in any pain even though he is not showing it. The vet will let you know what you can do to keep weight on him and what is the best thing for the dog. I know how hard it is to loose a best friend but if it is in the best interest for him then that is what has to be done. I wouldn't want him to suffer and I know you don't. I think he will be fine though. I would get a second opinion though just to be on the safe side. You might get him a little baby pit to make him feel like he has a friend when you guys leave him alone during the day or something. I hope everything goes okay with him. Best of luck.

If you know for a fact hat it is not worms or any other intestinal fluke, and there is no medical reason why he is loosing weight, then you are right, his time is limited. It could be a while, it could be soon (can't tell with what's written and a complete history).

Signs of the end: loosing weight, unusual elimination in the house / lose of bodily functions, lethargy, change in eating habits (less), not as interested in his usual fun activities. Many times, a pet will go off on his own to die. Sometimes they go to their favorite place, seek a heat source or want to go outside. If you feel he is suffering, then the right thing to do is to humanely euthanize him and let him die with dignity. He will do anything to please you, even to this day, and you may not know any pain he may be in, as they hide it well and pits are extremely tolerable of pain anyway. Good luck. This is a horrible time for you and your family. Just know that you gave him a wonderful home, lots of love and he will be waiting for you to cross the rainbow bridge with you.

Thinking of you.

Well if i was you i would take him to a vet to see what the problem is , i have a god that is 17 years old , sound like if he is a out side dog that he might have heart worms, if he is not getting treated for that already ,,,i mean . You really don't want your dog to suffer do you ? You know your dog better than i do so if you feel he is suffering do the best think you can do for him and put him to sleep, I'am very sorry for your lose i know because i had to put a dog down before and he is buried in my back yard , i love him so much but he was suffering to much for me to bear.

That's a shame your husband doesn't want to take the dog to the vet. Unfortunately that is really your best bet. There are so many problems that can cause these symptoms. It might be something as simple as bad teeth--if his teeth are in bad shape he won't be willing or able to eat well. Or it could be something as serious as liver or kidney disease.
Are you certain that he doesn't have worms? If he hasn't been to the vet it is certainly possible, there are many types of worms and they are very common. Without prevention or regular deworming it is a high probability that any dog has worms. Although, it is unlikely that parasites would cause such severe symptoms.
Could you take him to the vet without your husband knowing? Or if money is a problem, is there an SPCA nearby that might help? I feel so bad for you. I wish you the best.

You NEED professional advice from vet, not from people on this site who know little or nothing about your dog or his health history. Explain to your husband your fears that the end may be near for the dog, and that a trip to the vet may well prolong the dog's life. Good Luck!

How much water is your dog drinking? If he is drinking A LOT of water he has diabetties and the end unfortunatly is near. He is old for a pitt theses days. so you might want to just baby him bunches and give him whatever food he will eat. I'm all for healthy food but when it comes to getting them to eat I'll do anything. I'm too much of a softy to see them not eat.
