I have major major split ends. I have dark thick coarse wavy/curly hair. Up until i was 16 i never took care of it, then discovered the flat iron and have used it ever since. But recently, for about 3 months, i am shedding horribly. I have stopped flat ironing it, and switched to washing and conditioning majorly and scrunching it with tresseme mousse and hairspray. But it seems to get worse, and i notice it mostly when i shower and comb it. I want to go back to flat ironing cuz i seem to be loosing less hair. I use Dove Therapy shampoo/conditioner and put in leave in conditioner too. I seriously have atleast 7 or 8 hairs come out each time i comb thru sections, or when i use the flat iron and mousse it. Seriously what do i do?

Ok so now that my hair is dry fully, its so thick and bushy that it feels like i didnt have any fall out. But now b/c i didnt leave it to air dry, i gotta flat iron it. I put a thermal protector, a cheap brand that was my 1st try, but i figure it helps more than it would if i didnt use any at all. But i only applied to the roots. If I put my hair flat iron on the lowest heat setting, should that help? and if hair comes out while straightening it, how can i make it so that it doesnt happen?

It's normal to loose hair everyday. It might seem like a lot to you, but it's usually the same amount as everyone else. I would start with a trim to rid of your split ends. Try a deep conditioner once a week, and a regular conditioner every other time. Dove (what your using now) is a great shampoo. I style my hair everyday as well, and I loose a lot too. Here are my other tricks. GO ALL NATURAL at least once a week .... No mousse, no ironing. Wash your hair every other day. (if possible) Always brush your hair before bed, and let your hair air dry as much as possible before blow-drying. I hope I could help!! Good luck!

To avoid split ends, you should trim your hair about every 6 weeks. Flat ironing hair makes it thin. That could be why your hair is splitting.

As for the shedding part.. it sounds like you are using a lot of conditioner. Make sure you don't put it on your scalp. It'll make you lose more hair. The mousse/ hairspray might be another reason as to why you are losing so much hair because it has alot of chemicals in it. Don't worry to much though. I lose hair everytime i brush it as well.

I believe that if you leave you hair down and tie it up the same amount you'll lose less.

shedding is natural about 100 strands per day on a low average,
so shedding is to be expected, however, fear should set in if you see big bald patches on your head, that's called alopesia
You should see a dermatologist for that
if you're using hair scrunchies STOP!
stop the mouse. Stop using the scrunchies
Mouse dries the hair and it eventually breaks.
Scrunchies cut the hair at the base of the pony tail
flat ironing is fine but you need to super condition the hair and also pre treat the hair with a light polmaide like olive oil, coconut oil not enough to weigh down the hair just to give a very very very light coating as not to dry the hair out durring the flat ironing proccess

The only way to get rid of split ends, is by cutting them off! It is ok to use a flat iron if you are using the right products with it. Biolage carries a thermal active spray that you use before using a flat iron, another one is Matrixs Sleek Look Iron smoother. I suggest you stay away from products that you buy at the drug store. Products that you buy at a drugstore do not penetrate the hair follicle, they just coat it with wax. Next time you are at the salon, talk to your stylist about a deep conditioner and a good trim!

The only way to get rid of them is a good trimming. You should use a deep conditioner or hot oil treatment every month, you can still flat iron it and style it but just give your hair a rest every now and then. Eat healthy foods and drink plenty of water, whatever will keep your nails healthy will keep your hair healthy, you can detangle your hair in the shower with conditioner and a special comb.I also use children's hair detangler spray when it is dry, it works and makes my hair smell good.Let you hair dry naturally when you can and try not to dye it too much.Everyone loses a certain amount of hair every time they brush it or style it so don't worry too much,I have really long and thick hair and it is normal for me to lose like 30 strands or more. ( I have plenty to spare )

Your hair is breaking from the flat ironning. This is happening to me, and it's get WAY better cause' Im actually going back to scrunching my hair to curly. It just takes time! So be patient. Here's some tips:

When Ironing: Use good shampoo (I use Redken shampoo when straightening my hair, and a really good deep conditioner). Then I put hair serum before I blowdry, then some more before I straighten.

When curling: I use herbal essence shampoo and conditioner, and moose. While my hair is wet I scrunch my hair with the moose, and let it air dry.

Trust me... It just takes time for you hair to repair, but so that you can go back and forth from straightening to curling, you really have to take good care of it, and different care for different things.

I have curly hair too but it not good to iron it and dont go back cause thats were you get the split ends from but your saying you lose that at least 7 or 8 hairs shed thats ok every girl loses at least 100 hairs a day you just dont notice it. But if you want to get your hair healthy dont iron it keep on triming it ever 6 month and add layers because thats good for curly hair and if you really want to iron your hair dont do it to much like once every to months cause that kills your hair or instead have it blow dried at salon its less burn then iron

The normal shedding of hair believe it or not is around 70 to 80 hairs a day, so if you are combing once a day you could be seeing most of it, which may be normal. But if you have lots of split ends then it is breakage and you need to get it trimmed, it needs to be cut to the strongest point of the hair shaft or it will continue to split up the shaft and break off.

Your hair is shedding b/c it is simply begging you to stop using so much heat on it. Stop using the flat iron everyday, too much heat causes serious damage such as split ends and dryness. Go to a professional for a good trim and a deep conditioning.
