That's simple. I think at the #1 pencil is best!

Actually, that number refers to a hardness number, where #1 is the softest and #2 is harder and #3 is even harder. Let's say that a #10 is so hard that it doesn't write. A #0.10 pencil is like a crayon.

Because alot of standardized tests are run through a machine that can only read #2 pencil lead.

I don't know, but in class when the professor or scantron sheet says you must use a #2 pencil, it's a big old lie. I never use a #2. I use mechanical. As long as you're not using oddly colored pencils, the scantron will read it just fine.

#2 is darker with a softer lead in the pencil-just the way they clasified the pencils I guess

I guess for the same reason you drive on a parkway and park in a driveway....life makes no sense, never has, never will....best not to question, it just gets you to thinkin, which leads to the drinkin', well, enough about me.....don't know....good luck though!

i believe they are referring to either the thickness of, or the grade of lead in that pencil. could be wrong though....
