I was adviced to get a sonogram of my thryoid done. My doctor told me the results today and I guess I kinda blanked-out when he said to check if its benign or not.

Here is what my results says:

Clinical History: 20 yr-old female; r/o thyroid nodule
Right Lobe: 3.4 cm x 1.7 cm x 2.0 cm. Normal in size. Nodule is noted measuring 1.4 cm x 1.0 cm with minimal increased blood flow pattern in the perphery.
Left Lobe: 3.5cm x 1.3cm x 1.2cm. Normal in size. Echo paattern is normal. No solid or cystic lesion is seen.
Istamus of thyroid gland measures 4mm which is within normal limits.

Conclusion
1. Evidence of 1.4cm in the right lobe of thyroid gland.
2. Suggest correlation with nuclear medicine thyroid scan to exclude hyperfunctioning nodule and subsequently to consider biopsy of this solitary nodule.

I know that I might have to have a biopsy. He said the nodule is solid not liquid so they can't drain it. I'm kinda at a loss and I guess scared. What can this all mean?

first of all don't be afraid.
i went thru the scans and the biopsy and was diagnosed with thyroid cancer two years ago.
one side of my neck was packed with tumors, but only one, a small one, about 1.25 cm, was cancerous. they removed all the tumors, half my thyroid and the parathyroid glands on the same side.
i had been tired and had no energy for several years, barely able to get through the day at work let alone come home and start doing housework etc. when i complained about my health issues, my g.p. would just brush it off saying it was because i was overweight and getting older. i finally changed my g.p. and the first thing the new fella did was send me for tests and they found what they found.
i had my surgery and came through it with no problems. when i woke up in 'recovery' i felt better than i had in years. honestly, the minute i woke up i felt marvelous! it was like all the energy that had been suppressed all those years was bubbling through my body.
i was out of the hospital the next day though for several weeks i had difficulty speaking, [much to my husband's delight! ha ha], but that soon cleared up.

now let me tell you something you may not know. if you have to have cancer, thyroid cancer is a good one to have. it is a manageable cancer, so if they can not get rid of it you can live with it for a very long time.

strangely enough, one of my neighbors was diagnosed about the same time as I was. she wasn't as lucky as i was as far as being detected early on. she had the same surgery as i had, but her cancer had spread.
she is still going strong, has no great health issues, her cancer is being managed and she is enjoying her life much the same as before this all came to be. the only difference for her is she now knows its there. she looks good, feels good, has lots of energy and is happy.

go back to your doctor and have the scans and biopsy and surgery if needed.

you will get through this and you will feel better once it is all over with!

please trust me, and trust your doctor. don't be afraid! don't ignore the issue, but don't be afraid of it.

keep the faith girl, and stay strong!
everyone reading this wishes you the very best!!!!!!!
good luck to you, god bless, and keep us all posted on how you are doing!

It's always scary when doctors order more tests. This test isn't a bad one. My husband recently had a nuclear medicine scan--the nuclear medicine is to show up the thyroid better so that anything abnormal will be seen for what it is. It doesn't hurt. I've had three biopsies for my breasts and you are sedated so that they don't hurt. It's more your own nerves that get to you. I've learned from having several medical problems over the years is not to worry too much beforehand. The basic information looks pretty good, and I'd say they just want to make sure. Doctors don't like to make mistakes. The nodule is small and that is good, so whatever it is they will do is to see that you get the right treatment. When you go in for the treatments, take a paperback book with you for the waiting times, something to take your mind off what's ahead. Or your Ipod if you have one and just listen to soothing music. We're always more scared of what we don't know. And most of the time these tests come back benign. If it doesn't, they are catching it early.

AA sonogram may refer to the following:

A diagnostic medical image created using ultrasound echo equipment, see Medical ultrasonography.
A spectrogram.

It is only to asses your thyroid and the position of the glands etc. It will not give any suggestion to say that you are having cancer. it may not be cancerous also. Doctors might have a doubt of cancer on the test results given by you. A biopsy will only tell the actual position. There is not need of getting scared and early detection of the disease if present can be very useful. If it is declared that you ar not having it then go on celebration and don't forget to invite me.

Anyway there is nothing to worry and every thing will be alright.

God bless you.

Why didn't you ask your doctor? You can always call and speak with him/her about it. It's understandable that a patient will not fully grasp what is being said to them when they are caught off guard by something. Doctors know this.

This doesn't necessarily mean that you have cancer. Whenever there are cysts found they usually perform a biopsy to determine if it is benign (meaning, harmless) or malignant (literally meaning, bad. This can be cancerous.) Cysts can be caused by any number of factors, most of which are treatable. I would wait for the results of the biopsy before you get too worried about it.

Good luck!

I no your worried, but stay positive.
Once the biopsy is done & the test comes back, you go into Dr office(carry a note pad w/questions you want to ask) & go from there.

Ask your doc as many questions as you can and do research on the net.
