Great, great, great, GREAT match. Why didn't I think of it?
Sweetpea would do to Duran exactly what he did to Chavez. And probably get shafted the same way.

Great matchup Brent F! Whitaker is a very elusive and clever fighter and a southpaw too! Duran has above average punching power, good boxing skills and an excellent counter puncher especially with his right hand. I believe early in the fight that Whitaker would outbox Duran by a slight margin with Duran landing the harder punches. By the 12th round I see Whitaker slowing noticeably and Duran coming on strong and landing brutal punches. The refereee intervenes in round 13 and declares Duran the winner by TKO.

Brent ~
I was wondering when you were going to get to this one. In my opinion, this wouldn't have been a good fight for Duran. I particularly didn't care for Roberto at welterweight, yes he beat Ray Leonard, but he also lost to him too at welterweight. Durans best weight was indeed lightweight.
As you know how I feel about boxers that showboat nobody did it better (worse) than "Sweet Pea" and Duran would have a problem with that. It wouldn't be bad enough to be hit 4 to 1, but to be humiliated on top of it would be horrible for Duran. Ray did it and look what it did to Duran then, just imagine him fighting Whitaker who showboated ten times more the Leonard.
Duran would quit pretty much in the same fashion as he did when he fought Leonard, but his exit would be a lot sooner, maybe the 4th round.
This fight would break my heart. Thanks for the question Brent.

Whitaker - W 40 (KO's 17) TF 46 - W pct 87% - KO pct 37% - wins over R. Mayweather, McGirt{2}, Chavez and Nelson - KO 'ed by Bojorguez (never heard of him) - #10 ranked fighter
Titles at 135, 140, 147 and 154
Some of his fights were boring because of his great defensive skills.
Won 1984 Gold medal at Light wt.
Duran - W 103 (KO's 70) TF 119 - W pct 87% - KO pct 58% - wins over Leonard, Buchanan, Cuevas, D. Moore and Palomino - KO'ed by Leonard (Duran quit in the ring), Hearns and W. Joppy - #28 ranked puncher - #5 ranked fighter
Won titles at 135, 147, 154 and 160.
As you would realize, this is a boring fight. Duran starts off slow attempting to out box Pernell. He has learned his lesson and he knows that he can not quit again (like he did against Leonard). Duran starts a furious push and presses Whitaker through out the rest of the bout. Both fighter are warned and lose points due to illegal tactics. Duran could have won this fight had he started to press earlier. Whitaker could have won if would not have been clowning thru out the fight and if he would have mixed it up more. This bout ends in a majority draw and a riot ensues between fans of both fighters.

Duran in his prime would bully Whitaker into a fight.

A technically skilled boxer vs a stoned hand brawler that will be a good one.
I think pernell would win this one hands down. he is too quick, too smart and has power. duran even in his prime won't stand a chance. Its just like watch mayweather vs gatti though gatti was pretty washed up when they met but i think it will be the same story. sweet pea in 10 rounds then you'll hear no mas once again.
