G-D or G-d, because people don't want to use the Lord's name in vain.

It depends on your background. Of course, here, everyone's pretty sloppy, so take that into account. god and God are a bit like mom and Mom, ie; uppercase as a specific reference to your god, and lower case as the more general any god. For some people, the word God is so sacred that it's not to be written unless in a holy text or prayer. So where ever it's written, G-d is used unless you're prepared to burn or bury whatever it is you wrote the word God on. Not sure how that works on the 'net. And GOD is just because some people think All-Caps conveys some sort of extra importance, as though writing big letters makes it extra true. It's really just called "shouting."

People spell it GOD because they want to emphasize and give honor to God. Jews spell it G-d because they believe that it shouldn't be spelled out except in sacred texts. People spell it God because they consider it a name as well as a title, or as a token of respect. People spell it god because they either don't care about capitalization or they're not talking about the Judeo-Islamo-Christian God.

I spell it Allah...why? Generally though god with a small "g" refers to gods like Zeus or Apollo or some other god in a multi god system. Some people use God or GOD to refer to the one and only God. I prefer Allah as that is what He seems to prefer.

God is usually spelled because you are referring to his name, god is just using gods in general and not anyone in particular, GOD is what is used when you are angry which is taking God's name in vain and that is a sin, and G-d is short a shortened version of God.

"And G-D is just out of foolishness. The only way that you can use the Lords name in vain"
that is not the reason behind spelling it as G-d. the reason is due to the biblical prohibition of desecrating a name of G-d. this includes writing down a name of G-d and destroying it. therefore we do not spell it entirely to protect future people who may accidentally tear up a piece of paper or throw it in the trash, etc, without realizing that a name of G-d is written on it. we do it to avoid causing them to uknowingly sin.

In the Old Testament, and still in some Jewish traditions, to say the name God held so much power that they would not say it or write it for fear of being disrespectful.
You will see the Christian Bible the name GOD (all in small upper case letters) in place of the original hebrew text that may have said something like Jehovah Jireh (the God who provides for our needs). The Jewish people had so many names for God that you will see them all refered to in this "small uppercase GOD" G-D is the same.
The use of lower case god refers to opther gods, like greek gods, for whom God is not their name. It is capitalized only when refering to God as his name.

GOD = yelling
G-D = usually those who are Jewish do this out of respect
God = most common
god = not THE God, just a god, like the Greek gods

When you see God or GOD, they are speaking of the True God of Israel. God the Father. When it is spelled god it refers to heathan gods idols and things as such. And G-D is just out of foolishness. The only way that you can use the Lords name in vain is when you teach his word and the person you are teaching to does not get anything out of what your teaching meaning does not learn anything.

GOD - yelling or something
G-d - they dont type out His name out of respect (its kind of sacred)
God - God's actual name, so it is capitalized like any other proper noun
god - refers to a god, but is not referring to God by the name God, unless they are usuing bad grammar

I think it depends on how passionate we are about the subject of God. I spell it this way - as a proper name.
