The Second Amendment is pretty straight forward and the courts have REFUSED to touch it because of that. So simply it is a right, the second right and it is there to protect the other rights from a tyrranical government, not for hunting.

Keep that clearly in mind, the purpose is to allow us to defend ourselves from our congress, which it is looking like it is about time to start defending.

See the links below for some better more reasoned information.

For unlce osbert - if I can see you I have a rifle that can hit you, so before the tank can close that have to sneak up on me, which they cannot, plus they would have to get past my neighbors IED, and you would of course have to get the military to come at me since I am legal and in my rights and EVERY person I know who has served their country will defend to their death my rights, so I guess there would not be a Red Dawn would there.

The declaration of independence states that the citizens have an obligation to overthrow the government by force if it is no longer just.

The 2nd amendment suggests that the states have the right to form a militia in order to counter the force of the federal government / army and keep it in check.

it seems to placate the rednecks. the 2nd amendment is pretty cool... it was supposedly so there was always a standing militia, in case the country was invaded, all the able-bodied men could just grab their weapons and meet the enemy... also there was the notion that each man was responsible for his own liberty, so it is also sort of symbolically viewed as a way for the populace to keep the government honest. if we're all armed, we can't be subdued by a tyrant if he gets into the whitehouse.

but i don't know how useful your sniper scope and other toys are going to be when dudes in tanks show up in your yard. see red dawn.

What other purpose does a gun serve other than hunting and protection?

If you can't think of any reasons, you shouldn't be writing the speech. Rather you should be campaigning for their abolition (except for police and armed forces issue)

Self defense and hunting are the only reasons I see that they are legal. Other than that you don't need them.

Unless you're a gun collector, why else would you have one except for
the above?
