Platinum Fashion Mall - must go! wholesale prices, fully aircon,

MBK shopping centre (adjacent to it is the Tokyu shopping centre)

Naraya at World Trade Centre - shop selling lots of bags and small purses etc. make nice gifts

there are tons of shopping centres but the above are cheaper.

It depends on what you want to buy.
For great buy on clothes and accessories, go to Pratunam Market and the many surrounding shopping centres (both with and without air-conditioning), including Platinum Fashion Mall ( not sure of spelling). Need at least a couple of days just to go through the shops. Also has night bazaar worth checking out.
For the experience, a great variety of stuff from thailand, go to the weekend "Chatuchak Market". Can get very hot and humid though. Plan Sunday 9am to 3 pm there. A lot of shops now display their price and there is less bargaining compared to last time. Prices usually very cheap and reasonable but sellers give less or no discount, compared to previously.
For night market, the best organised and clean one is Suan Lum Night Bazaar, east of Lumpini Park. Slightly more expensive than chatuchak, but much nicer, comfortable and cooler.

Patpong has a smaller night bazaar. near some pubs and night entertainment. A bit more messy and expensive.
In you have spare time, spend a few hours at MBK for somemore good shopping.

Mah Boon Krong or 'MBK', multi floors of shops that sells everything, where most tourists go to. The best! Convenient, alight at Siam or National Stadium BTS. Must know how to bargain, to get a good deal.

'Pratunam' is excellent for clothings, wholesale market (buy more to get the wholesale price). In the vicinity of MBK.

Not forgetting 'Chaktuchak', weekend market. You get almost anything here! Very convenient too, next to Mo Chit BTS or Chaktuchak MRT.

Try 'Suan Lum Night Bazaar', something like Chaktuchak, opens in the late afternoon/night only, the goods (and prices) are of better quality. I like this one! It has a big food court/beer garden besides it. The ladies get to do shopping while the guys drink/eat/watch the entertainment (there's a stage with live band and performance), while waiting for them. Easily accessible by their MRT (Suan Lum Station).

There's also many smaller scale night markets at most major shopping centers. I frequent those easily accessible by their subway system (better than travelling by taxis, with the traffic jams Bangkok is famous for!) - outside Carrefour (Ratchada), stop at Thai Cultural Center MRT; outside Central Ladprao Departmental Store (Phayothin MRT Station).

Happy shopping :-)

Chatuchak is good, but the best place to shop is at the night market in Chiang Mai. If you are planning to travel to Chiang Mai also, I would wait until then to shop. Prices are better, and not as much negotiating to arrive at a fair price.
